The primary protection of a printed circuit board is its enclosure. However, in many cases, even solidly sealed housing is not enough to ensure sufficient resistance to harsh weather conditions, especially that the circuit should be protected even for many years. Small dust particles and moisture can penetrate the housing, gradually contaminating and even damaging the PCB and electronic components mounted on it. In this category you will find protective varnishes, dedicated to protect electronics against harmful environmental influence.

This question requires a more detailed answer. In general, we can say that protective varnish works well on larger surfaces of the board, also on those that contain even a large number of elements - mainly SMD - or solders (in case of the bottom side of THT boards and boards made in mixed technology). Epoxy resin, on the other hand, is perfect for coating small PCBs which will operate in extremely difficult conditions, although it will also seal places difficult to varnish, e.g. near connectors or high electrolytic capacitors, MKP or MKT.
PVB 16 (spray) or PVB 60 (brush-on liquid) provides basic protection against harmful effects of atmospheric gases and moisture. Spray is better for covering large areas with an even, aesthetic layer, while a small brush will give much better control in places inaccessible to the spray. If you are making your own PCB and don't plan to use soldermask, LT-4 flux may be sufficient, which besides basic protection of bare copper tracks also provides excellent solderability of pads - especially if you don't use tin plating.
You have surely come across "worked out" or even damaged contact pads in car remote controls or remote controllers of RTV equipment. Such fields are usually in the form of interlocking combs, which are connected by conductive rubber placed under proper button and are the simplest and cheapest form of microswitch. This solution is used practically in all TV remote controls, home theater sets or air conditioners. To repair tracks in such places you can use a special protective paint based on graphite from AG TermoPasty. This product will also be useful in repairing low-current signal paths in printed circuit boards (keep in mind the relatively high resistance of such connections).
