It is interesting to note that Flir takes its name from the acronym for "forward-looking infrared camera". Flir Systems is the world's largest company of its kind, specializing in the design and manufacture of thermal imaging cameras and imaging components and sensors. Originally shortly after its founding in 1978, the company was based in Tigard, Oregon, USA, where it manufactured airborne IR systems. With the growth and acquisition of related companies in the 1990s, Flir moved to Portland.
Market Conquest.
Shortly after the move, Flir entered into a partnership with Hughes Aircraft Company. Three years later, the company scored a stock market debut, where it raised more than $ 11 million, which was just the beginning of the good fortune. In the following year, i.e. 1994, the company reached a turnover of 47 million a year. The next step was the acquisition of Swedish infrared system Agema in 97, which doubled the size of the company.
