Satellite navigation - what is GNSS?

GNSS is the global navigation system of Global Navigation Satellite Systems, which covers the entire Earth. Its main task is to determine the user's position. The GNSS systems also include the GPS Global Positioning System and GLONASS. Wondering how satellite navigation works? It's simple - as a type of radio navigation, it uses radio waves that are broadcast from artificial satellites to determine the location of points and moving receivers along with the parameters of their movement on the Earth's surface.

Suggested use of the module

  • Driving and flying vehicle navigation
  • Handheld positioning tracker
  • Item tracking
  • Smart weather station

Pinout description and connection diagram

The module supports two communication interfaces - I2C and UART. The user can choose the method of communication depending on the project needs. Connect the pins according to the dependence below:

  • D / T - I2C bus data line / UART bus transmitter
  • C / R - I2C bus clock / I2C bus receiver line
  • "-" - GND - system ground
  • "+" - VCC - board power pin

For more information on connecting the module, see the user's guide .

The module has a very high build quality. I2C communication allows you to request and access only specific piece of information really quickly instead reading through an entire NMEA message through UART which can take a long time even at higher baud rates. The DFRobot GPS arduino library on the other hand is very poorly written. The only example sketch provided does not show all data nor does it cover all the module's features. Meaning that this module will be difficult to interface for beginners unless you are not using I2C.
