How are characters created on an LCD display?
A single character on an LCD display is displayed on a matrix usually 5x7 or 5x8 in size, where the first number of the dimension indicates the number of columns and the second number of the dimension indicates the number of rows, with the eighth row usually left blank and is often used as a field for a blinking cursor. The structure of the LCD display uses liquid crystal technology, which, under the influence of an electric field (the source of which is the voltage supplying the display), changes the arrangement of its molecules as a result of changing the polarization of light. LCD displays have much greater possibilities of representing information than single LEDs and segment displays and are characterized by the fact that they can display numbers, letters (which is why they are also called alphanumeric displays), special characters, as well as animations and graphic symbols. The LCD display is standardly equipped with two registers, i.e. a data register and an command register, and can operate in 4-bit or 8-bit mode. The registers contain 3 to 4 selection lines and 8 data lines through which the display communicates with the microcontroller via the GPIO or I2C interface.
LCD display sizes
The display designation "2x16" means that its screen consists of two lines and allows for a maximum of sixteen characters to be placed on a single line. The Botland store offers LCD displays in sizes 2x8, 2x16 and 4x20. If you are new to electronics and programming, it would be best for you to choose a 2x16 display. However, if you are designing extensive automation and control systems, then a good choice will be to use a 4x20 display, which will allow you to display more information at the same time.
Alphanumeric and graphic displays - FAQ
An alphanumeric display is an optoelectronic module (usually LCD) that allows the display of numbers, letters and special characters, which distinguishes it from other types of displays (e.g. seven-segment displays, intended mainly for displaying digits, or graphic screens , capable of presenting icons and even photos ).
The heart of a liquid crystal display is a thin layer of liquid crystals placed between a layer of transparent shape electrodes (defining the display segments) and common electrodes. The whole thing is located between two perpendicularly positioned polarizers - turning on the voltage on a given segment causes the light to twist through the liquid crystal, which leads to darkening or brightening a given area.
