The Unit Gateway H2 from M5Stack is a modern communication gateway module designed around the ESP32-H2-MINI-1-N2 chip. It enables connectivity in the ZigBee 3.0, Thread 1.3, and Matter (Thread-based) standards, relying on the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol. A built-in hardware encryption engine ensures high transmission security, and communication takes place via the UART (PORT.C) interface. The module can act as both a gateway (Thread Border Router) and an end device , and thanks to USB Type-C and Grove programming connectors, it is ready for quick implementation and integration.

Pinouts and compatibility with M5Stack
The module communicates with the main unit via PORT.C (Grove) , using the UART interface (UART_RX and UART_TX). For the CoreS3 controller, port C is pins G17 (TX) and G18 (RX) . The module's pinout follows the typical Grove layout: GND (black), 5V (red), UART_RX (yellow), UART_TX (white) . Thanks to the standardized connector, the module also works with other M5Stack controllers (e.g. Core2 , Atom , StickC Plus ).
The module communicates with the M5 series host via serial port (UART) via the Grove interface.
Gateway H2 supports connection protocols ZigBee , Thread and Thread-based Matter.
Programming and integration
The module supports the Arduino IDE and ESP-IDF environments. It is designed for developing applications such as Thread Border Routers , ZigBee endpoints , and Matter communication nodes . M5Stack provides official guides, code examples, and schematics. Programming is possible via the UART port (using a USB-UART converter) or USB Type-C port (BOOT mode). Additionally, users have access to full SDK documentation.
