The M5Stack Unit Gesture (PAJ7620U2) module is one of those sensors that gives an immediate "wow" effect in the design. Instead of touching the screen or clicking buttons, you can control your device with a wave of your hand in the air. Here is an evaluation of this module: What can this sensor do? At the heart of the module is the PAJ7620U2 chip, which integrates gesture recognition with a built-in IR LED and a lens. It recognizes 9 gestures: Up, Down, Left, Right, Forward, Backward, Clockwise Rotation, Counterclockwise Rotation, and Wave. Speed: It has two modes – Normal and Gaming Mode, which allows for very fast motion recognition with low latency. Light Resistance: It does a good job of filtering ambient light, which is crucial for infrared sensors. Advantages and strengths Hygiene and convenience: Ideal for Smart Mirror projects in the bathroom or lighting control in the kitchen where your hands are dirty or wet and don't want to touch the CoreS3 or M5StickC. Low CPU load: The chip itself analyzes the image from the sensor and issues a ready-made information about the detected gesture via the I2C bus. Your ESP32 doesn't need to perform complicated AI calculations. Range: Operates optimally at a distance of 5-15 cm from the sensor, making it ideal for short-range interfaces. Challenges and limitations Viewing angle: The sensor has a limited viewing angle (typically approx. 60°). If your hand is too close or at a large angle, the gesture will not be detected.
