Manufacturer's description: PoE M.2 HAT+ - PCIe adapter for NVMe M.2 drives with PoE support - for Raspberry Pi 5 - Waveshare 28411
The PoE M.2 HAT+ is a multifunctional adapter designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi 5. It leverages the native PCIe interface available in the latest generation of the minicomputer, allowing you to connect fast NVMe M.2 SSDs and achieve significantly higher read and write speeds than traditional microSD cards. The manufacturer claims a theoretical throughput of up to 8 Gb/s and actual transfer rates of up to 800 MB/s . The module also integrates Power over Ethernet compliant with the IEEE 802.3af/at standard, allowing the Raspberry Pi to be powered and connected to the network using a single Ethernet cable . Additional 5V and 12V outputs allow you to power external devices, while active cooling and a heatsink ensure stable operation even under heavy SSD load.

HAT+ standard and full compatibility with Raspberry Pi 5
The PoE M.2 HAT+ is built in accordance with the latest HAT+ standard, developed by Raspberry Pi for accessories designed for the Raspberry Pi 5. This standard extends the classic HAT solution with additional hardware identification mechanisms, Automatic detection and easier system configuration. Thanks to the use of EEPROM, compatible shields can be automatically recognized by the Raspberry Pi software. The board contains all the components necessary to simultaneously support an NVMe drive and PoE power. The manufacturer has implemented an M.2 Key M socket supporting NVMe drives, a PoE controller with an isolated switching converter, an active cooling fan , a PCIe FFC connector for connecting to the Raspberry Pi 5, LED status indicators , and additional 5V and 12V power outputs . The pass-through 40-pin GPIO connector has also been retained, allowing the use of additional expansion modules. The shield works exclusively with the Raspberry Pi 5 and is not compatible with the Raspberry Pi 4, Raspberry Pi 3, or earlier models . Only SSDs using the NVMe protocol are supported – SATA M.2 media are not supported.
Fast NVMe storage for Raspberry Pi
The PCIe interface allows you to leverage the potential of modern NVMe SSDs. Compared to microSD cards, you gain significantly faster system boot times, faster file copying, and improved application responsiveness . The PoE M.2 HAT+ supports both PCIe Gen2 and Gen3 modes and allows you to boot the Raspberry Pi 5 directly from the installed SSD . This is an ideal solution for NAS servers, surveillance systems, AI applications, and projects requiring fast data access.
PoE power supply and additional power outputs
The built-in Power over Ethernet module, compliant with the IEEE 802.3af/at standard, enables the transmission of electricity and network data over a single Ethernet cable. This solution simplifies the installation of devices mounted in network cabinets, monitoring points, or automation systems. The shield provides a GPIO output with a capacity of up to 5V/4.5A and an additional 2-pin connector offering a voltage of 12V/2A . This allows for powering additional modules, fans, LED lighting, and other Raspberry Pi-compatible devices.
