Another very important element of power supplies for LED strips is the built-in protection. In a good quality power supply there should be at least three. The first is a short circuit protection, then an overload protection and a surge protection. It is the latter that protects the LEDs in the strip, but keep in mind that some power supplies require a ground connection for the protection to fully work. Once you've checked the protections, let's look at the power efficiency of the power supply itself. The higher the better, because the power supply will lose less energy. Good quality equipment has an efficiency rating of 85% and higher.
When choosing a power supply, we need to choose its power, to do this we should count the power of all receivers. If we do not have a receiver manual, in which the power would be given, we can count it by multiplying the supply voltage by the current drawn. Counting the power of receivers, you should remember about all the elements of the system, such as dimmers and controllers. After calculating the power, we choose the power supplies for LED strips with the same power as calculated or more. It is worth making a ten percent reserve, so as not to load the power supply at one hundred percent all the time.
When building a led lighting system, it is worth paying attention to the power supply to have some space to "breathe". Each electronic device emits heat during operation and it is better to provide it with proper ventilation and free exchange of air. Taking care of a good drainage of hot air, power supplies for LED strips will thank us with many years of trouble-free work. Sometimes manufacturers provide another parameter called MTBF, it defines the average time between failures. The rule is that the higher MTBF, the better power supply.
