Why ABS filament?

Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS polymer) is a material that many years ago definitely dominated the markets for universal and dedicated electronic housings, toys and household appliances . High mechanical strength with optimal flexibility and impact resistance , as well as a relatively high melting point , make ABS one of the plastics in the modern world. 3D printing was also quickly dominated by this material, despite the need to use high head temperatures (several dozen degrees higher than for an average PLA filament) and heating the work table. Virtually every 3D printer today is technologically prepared to work with the parameters imposed by ABS filaments.

ABS filaments – what should you remember?

When choosing a material for 3D printing, certain limitations of each material technology should be taken into account. ABS filaments, apart from the obvious requirements for the printer itself (working temperatures, bed heating), also require maintaining a fairly stable temperature of the environment in which the printer operates . Temperature changes (caused by air conditioning or draft) can significantly affect the quality and durability of the print, to which ABS is relatively sensitive. In addition, you should remember about the toxicity of gases generated in the process of melting the material in the head - hence the need to remove fumes through efficient ventilation and make sure that no people or animals stay near the device for an unnecessarily long time during printing. However, if you remember these limitations, 3D printing using ABS will reward you with excellent quality and durability.
