Product description: Grove - 2-channel inductive sensor LDC1612 - Seeedstudio 101020599

The sensor utilizes the Texas Instruments LDC1612 chip, a 28-bit inductance measurement converter , enabling highly accurate detection of changes in the electromagnetic field generated by the sensing coil. Unlike traditional proximity sensors, the module does not require contact with the object and effectively detects conductive elements, particularly metals. The system analyzes the parameters of the LC resonant circuit formed by the coil and capacitor . As a metal object approaches the coil, the energy required to sustain oscillation changes, allowing the presence or distance of the object to be determined. The sensor offers two measurement channels , support for remotely placed coils, and a wide frequency range from 1 kHz to 10 MHz .

  • Two independent measurement channels : possibility of operating two induction coils simultaneously
  • Metal object detection : non-contact detection of conductors and metal elements
  • Wide frequency range : supports sensors operating from 1 kHz to 10 MHz
  • High interference immunity : insensitive to DC magnetic fields and permanent magnets
  • Working in difficult conditions : the ability to compensate for aging and environmental influences
  • Low power consumption : 35 µA sleep mode and 200 nA shutdown mode
  • Grove connector : quick connection without soldering
  • 3.3V or 5V power supply : compatible with popular development platforms
  • Remote sensor location : possibility of moving the measuring element more than 20 cm away from the control electronics

Grove pinouts and communication interface

The module is equipped with a standard 4-pin Grove connector using the I2C bus. This significantly simplifies integration with Arduino, Seeeduino, Raspberry Pi, and other microcontrollers supporting I2C communication. Available pins include the VCC line for powering the module with 3.3V or 5V , GND for the system ground, and the SDA and SCL signals responsible for data transmission and the I2C bus clock signal. The default device address is 0x2B , but with appropriate configuration, it can be changed to 0x2A . Additionally, the board includes an INT pin for interrupts that signal the completion of a measurement. which allows you to optimize the operation of the microcontroller and reduce energy consumption.

Programming the LDC1612 sensor

The manufacturer provides a ready-made library for the Arduino environment , which means getting started with the module doesn't require advanced configuration. The library allows for quick reading of inductance values, support for one or two measurement channels, and configuration of system operating parameters. The module can be used to measure the distance of metal objects, build touchless buttons, rotary encoders, sliders, and metal detection systems. Read values can be directly analyzed in the user program and control decisions made based on them. Thanks to I2C communication, the sensor can be integrated not only with Arduino but also with Raspberry Pi , ESP32 , STM32 , and other microcontrollers equipped with appropriate bus libraries.
