ASA filaments – “what are they made of”?
ASA filament is one of the thermoplastic plastics , characterized by very high resistance to weather conditions , compared to e.g. ABS. What we mean here is not only temperature fluctuations (so severe in our climate, especially in recent years), but also UV radiation - a factor that strongly degrades not only the color, but also the structure of many other materials. Moreover, ASA, thanks to its appropriate stiffness, is perfectly amenable to mechanical processing (cutting or grinding). Details made of ASA filaments have a slightly shiny surface, but can be dissolved in acetone - which allows additional smoothing of prints in the post-processing process, analogously to a similar operation used on ABS prints. However, their tensile strength is as much as 500 kg/cm2 . Such properties mean that details made using ASA filaments can be used in applications that require special mechanical parameters.
ASA filament - Printing parameters and techniques
3D printing using ASA filaments takes place at operating temperatures slightly lower than those recommended for working with ABS - the manufacturer, DevilDesign, specifies the head temperature range from 230 to 240 °C and the table temperature from 90 to 100 °C. Unlike other filaments (e.g. PLA), cooling a print made using ASA is not recommended. The available ASA filaments have a diameter of 1.75 mm, so they can be easily used with almost all 3D printers on the market . Applications of ASA filaments
ASA filaments are perfect wherever prints will be exposed to difficult environmental conditions . Examples include handles, housings for devices, sensors or lighting used outside buildings and in poorly protected places (e.g. under airy roofs). Another example of application will be 3D printing of portable tourist devices (e.g. high-resistance DIY flashlights), housings and elements of hand-held measuring devices or covers of mobile robots. When choosing an ASA filament , it is worth paying special attention to the print strength parameters declared by the manufacturer, because individual ASA filaments differ from each other (this is due, among other things, to admixtures of dyes with different physicochemical properties).
