3D printing (also called additive manufacturing) is now a popular production method. Thanks to cheap printers available on the market, everyone can create a 3D object in their home. To print an item, it’s necessary to have a building material for a 3D printer called a filament. One of the most popular filaments is PLA, created in the 1930s by the American chemist Wallace Carothers. PLA filament is widely used in additive manufacturing due to its good mechanical properties. It’s also an excellent material for beginners because it’s easy to process. PLA has a melting temperature of 180 ºC, which allows not using a heating plate or closed enclosure. The only drawback is that the PLA plastic is thick so it can clog the print nozzle if you are not careful. PLA plastic is very popular in the 3D industry and is one of the most used plastics in 3D printing. Check a large selection of products at our store, if you are looking for a high-quality PLA filament.

PLA filament - Plastic for 3D printing
3D printing is the process of producing physical objects based on a 3D computer model. Depending on the material used and the field of application of the manufactured object, many 3D printing methods have been developed, including: FDM - thermoplastic material is extruded through nozzles , MJP - UV light-cured photopolymer sprayed in thin layers , CJP - gypsum powder colored with ink (color 3D printing ), SLS – thin layers of building powder melted with a laser , DMLS – metal powders melted with a high-power laser (3D metal printing). Thanks to the many available 3D printing techniques as well as the variety of available materials, we can both quickly prototype objects while maintaining low production costs, as well as produce ready-made products for sale. PLA - a filament that is suitable for 3D printing in most printers available on the market.
Quick prototype printed in 3D technology
If you need to make a prototype as well as a functional detail of your structure and you want to reduce the cost of producing the object, FDM 3D printing will be an excellent method. This is a method in which the material is applied through a nozzle heated to its melting point. The nozzle controls the material flow, and its position is determined by the printer based on a computer-generated CAM program. A physical object is manufactured layer by layer. This method is characterized by an accuracy of +/- 0.13 mm. One of the materials used in this method is PLA filament. PLA – Polylactide filament is a plastic fiber resistant to weather conditions and UV radiation and characterized by high mechanical strength. It is a biodegradable thermoplastic polyester which, thanks to the possibility of combining with many additives, can be optimized for special applications. Our store offers a wide range of PLA filaments in various colors, with diameters of 1.75 mm and 2.85 mm, sold in the form of spools. The weight of one spool of filament ranges from 500 to 2000 g, which corresponds to a fiber length of 90 to 330 m. The printing temperature for PLA filament ranges from 180 to 260 degrees C.
PLA filaments - FAQ
Filaments are materials from which 3D printing is made. These are thermoplastics, i.e. plastics called polymers, which melt when heated rather than burning, which allows them to be shaped and formed, and solidify when cooled. Most often they are wound on a spool.
Particularly valued PLA filaments are materials from Devil Design, Spectrum, Fiberlogy, Print-Me, Velleman, Noctuo, Rosa3D, Prusa and Sunlu. The mentioned Spectrum brand also deals with the PLA Pro filament line - these are materials with improved parameters for more specialized applications in 3D printing .
PLA filament is made of polyactide. PLA has become a popular bioplastic due to the fact that it is economically viable to produce from renewable resources. It is therefore a fully biodegradable polymer obtained from renewable raw materials, for example corn flour.
Both PLA and ABS are thermoplastics. PLA is stronger and stiffer than ABS, but its poor heat resistance properties make PLA a material mainly used by hobbyists. ABS is weaker and less stiff, but also harder and lighter, making it a better material for prototype applications.
Take a soft cotton cloth and apply a small amount of liquid polishing paste to it. Then apply this to the 3D print surface in small circles until all the paste is rubbed in. After the process is completed, the surface will be slightly smoother, but these are just the basics. You can find more ready-made solutions in the 3D printing postprocessing category.
