Compatible with: Arduino

Temperature measurement with ±0.03 °C accuracy

The Adafruit TMP119 is an I2C temperature sensor with a typical accuracy of ±0.03 °C from 0 °C to 45 °C and 16-bit resolution, that is 0.0078 °C per measurement step. It measures from -55 °C up to +155 °C and raises an alert when a set threshold is exceeded.

Texas Instruments, the chip manufacturer, recommends it for use in thermostats, cold chain tracking and gas and heat meters. The alert signal goes to the module's INT pin.

Accuracy across several temperature ranges

The manufacturer also gives the maximum accuracy, for each temperature range: ±0.08 °C from 0 °C to 45 °C, ±0.09 °C from -25 °C to +85 °C, ±0.12 °C from -40 °C to +85 °C, ±0.15 °C from -55 °C to +125 °C and ±0.2 °C from -55 °C to +150 °C. Typically it is even more accurate.

The TMP119 has the same software interface as the TMP117 sensor and differs only in the chip ID, so it works with the same libraries. The I2C lines have a level shifter, so the TMP119 module works with 3.3 V and 5 V logic, e.g. with Arduino or Raspberry Pi and Feather boards.

Is it right for you?

A good choice if:

  • you need temperature measurement with accuracy better than ±0.1 °C
  • you monitor a cold chain, a thermostat or a heat meter
  • you want an alert when a temperature threshold is exceeded, without constant reads

Consider another option if:

  • you want to connect up to 8 sensors on one bus: choose the MCP9808

Fun fact

Ready for NIST-traceable measurements

The TMP119 has hardware support for measurement traceability to NIST standards, the US national standards institute. Texas Instruments provides the NIST documents on request.

Frequently asked questions

How does TMP119 differ from TMP117?

They differ in accuracy: the TMP119 has a max. of ±0.08 °C from 0 °C to 45 °C, and the TMP117 ±0.1 °C from -20 °C to 50 °C. The interface is the same, only the chip ID differs.

How many sensors on one bus?

Two sensors. The ADDR pin or jumper changes the address of the second one on the bus from 0x48 to 0x49.

Does it work with 5 V Arduino?

Yes. The I2C lines have a level shifter, so the module works with both 5 V and 3.3 V logic, for example with Arduino, Raspberry Pi or Adafruit Feather development boards.
