Bluetooth 6.0 and smart home networks in an XIAO board
Seeed Studio XIAO nRF54LM20A is a board with a Nordic nRF54LM20A chip that supports Bluetooth LE 6.0, Thread, Zigbee and Matter and draws about 4.76 µA in sleep. Thread, Zigbee and Matter are smart home network protocols, so you can build a sensor on this board that works with gateways and automation systems.
Bluetooth 6.0 supports Channel Sounding, meaning distance measurement between Bluetooth devices, and NFC, meaning near-field communication, lets you pair a device, for example, by touching it with a compatible phone. The 128 MHz Cortex-M33 core works together with a RISC-V coprocessor, you get 512 KB RAM, 2 MB of non-volatile NVM memory and 8 MB flash, and you can program the board in the nRF Connect SDK, Zephyr or PlatformIO.

Pins like on an XIAO Plus from the very first version
The XIAO nRF54LM20A has no separate Plus version, because it has the additional pads from the start: on the bottom of the board there are pins D11-D18, a second SWD pair for debugging, NFC antenna contacts and the SHPHLD pin for ship mode, meaning a minimum-power mode for storage. Together with the 14-pin XIAO layout on the front, this gives you 28 GPIO pins, meaning general-purpose input and output pins.
Power is managed by the Nordic nPM1300 chip: it charges the Li-ion battery from USB Type-C, regulates the voltage and measures the battery status over I2C. The front of the board has the standard XIAO layout, so you can connect Grove sensors through the Grove Shield for XIAO or the XIAO Expansion Board.

0.33 µA in ship mode
The nPM1300 chip has a ship mode in which the board draws only 0.33 µA from the battery. That is more than 14 times less than in System OFF mode, where consumption is about 4.76 µA, so a battery-powered device can wait in a warehouse for a long time.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to attach the antenna?
Yes, the manufacturer recommends attaching it. The board uses an external antenna on the IPEX4 connector, and a 2.4 GHz FPC antenna is included.
What can I program this board in?
The manufacturer supports the nRF Connect SDK with the Zephyr system and PlatformIO with the platform-seeedboards platform. You can write Arduino-style programs using the nrf54-arduino-core.
Can I connect a Li-ion battery?
Yes. Solder a 3.7 V battery to the BAT pads. Charging and battery status measurement are handled by the nPM1300 chip, and you read its data over I2C.
