Motion and sound in a low-power board with Bluetooth 6.0
Seeed Studio XIAO nRF54LM20A Sense is a board with a Nordic nRF54LM20A chip, a motion sensor and a microphone that supports Bluetooth LE 6.0, Thread, Zigbee and Matter. The LSM6DS3TR-C IMU motion sensor combines an accelerometer and a gyroscope, and the MSM261DGT006 digital PDM microphone passes sound straight to the processor.
This combination is useful in activity-tracking bands, in gesture recognition and in TinyML, meaning machine learning on a microcontroller, for example for detecting voice commands. Thread, Zigbee and Matter are smart home network protocols. In sleep, the board draws about 4.76 µA from the battery.

What sets this model apart

Compared with the XIAO nRF52840 Sense Plus, this board adds Bluetooth 6.0 with Channel Sounding, meaning distance measurement between devices, as well as Thread, Zigbee and Matter networks, and it also has twice as much RAM. Keep in mind that you program it in the nRF Connect SDK, Zephyr or PlatformIO, and if you prefer MicroPython or CircuitPython, choose the XIAO nRF52840 Sense Plus.

Pins like on an XIAO Plus from the very first version
On the bottom of the board there are pads D11-D18, a second SWD pair for debugging, NFC antenna contacts and the SHPHLD pin for ship mode, meaning a minimum-power mode for storage, so together with the 14-pin XIAO layout on the front you get 28 pins. You connect a 3.7 V Li-ion battery to the BAT pads, and the Nordic nPM1300 chip charges it and measures its status over I2C.
Next to the 128 MHz Cortex-M33 core there is a 128 MHz RISC-V coprocessor, and the 8 MB of flash on the board is useful for sensor data and TinyML models. The front of the board has the standard XIAO layout, so you can connect Grove sensors through the Grove Shield for XIAO or the XIAO Expansion Board.

Bluetooth LE 6.0 in the nRF54LM20A chip supports Channel Sounding. This is a feature that lets two Bluetooth devices measure the distance between them, rather than just detecting that they are nearby.

The board has a 6-axis LSM6DS3TR-C motion sensor that combines an accelerometer and a gyroscope. It communicates over I2C and can report events through the INT1 interrupt output.
What is the board current consumption in sleep mode on battery power?
When powered from a 3.7 V battery in System OFF mode, the board draws about 4.76 µA, about 4.92 µA with wake-up by the GRTC timer, and 0.33 µA in ship mode.
What should I do if the project list does not load in PlatformIO?
Delete the old platform-seed and framework-seed packages from the PlatformIO packages folder and install the platform-seeedboards platform again. The problem is caused by several platform versions being installed at the same time.
