4 A stepper driver with SPI configuration and stall detection

Pololu MP6602 is a stepper motor driver with the MPS MP6602 chip. It works with a motor voltage from 4.5 V to 35 V and, according to the manufacturer's tests, maintains a current limit of up to 4 A per coil without a heatsink or forced cooling. It supports bipolar motors and 5-wire unipolar motors, with steps from full to 1/32.

You set the current, step mode, current decay time and holding current via SPI with 3.3 V or 5 V logic. You control the motor via SPI or the classic STEP and DIR inputs. The driver detects motor stall, measures back-EMF and reports faults: overcurrent, overtemperature, undervoltage or overvoltage and a disconnected coil.

A good choice for you?

A good choice if:

  • you are building a plotter, a CNC axis or a drive with a NEMA motor up to 4 A
  • you want to set the current and step mode in software, without a potentiometer
  • stall detection and error diagnostics matter to you

Consider another option if:

Did you know?

A driver that senses the motor's resistance

The MP6602 measures the back-EMF that the motor generates as it turns. Based on this it detects a stall, so the axis can return to its home position without a limit switch.

Frequently asked questions

Can I control the motor without SPI?

Not quite. SPI is needed to enable and configure the driver after every startup. After that you can feed in steps in the classic way via STEP and DIR.

Is there a library for Arduino?

Yes. The manufacturer provides an Arduino library with example programs.

Why is the measured current lower than the set one?

In full-step mode the coil current is about 70% of the set limit. The current drawn from the power supply is also lower than the coil current, because the driver operates in switching mode.
