SMA connectors

SMA connectors are coaxial connectors that are used for the installation of WiFi, GPS or GSM antennas, but also for other communication devices that use coaxial cables. Like BNC connectors, SMA connectors are used to connect coaxial cables, which transmit high frequency signals up to aprox. 18 GHz. Although the SMA connector was designed as early as 1960, it is still widely used around the world. If we have an antenna at home, e.g. for satellite TV, we probably also have coaxial cables and SMA connectors.

SMA connectors are deliberately designed to allow a stable connection with coaxial cabling while maintaining the maximum quality of the transmitted signal (minimizing signal losses). It is not an easy task because the structure of the coaxial cable is specific. The signal inside the cable is not susceptible to the influence of electric and magnetic fields from the outside, and the presence of the cable among other electrical devices does not interfere with its operation with its electric or magnetic field.

SMA connectors

Today, coaxial cables are used primarily to transmit weak signals at very high frequencies. Inside the cable there is a steel or aluminum, copper-plated wire or a twisted copper or steel cable. The next layer is the dielectric, which acts as internal insulation - the wave impedance of the entire cable depends on it.

The next layer is made of material (usually copper or aluminum braid), which is also a conductor and provides protection against electromagnetic interference from the environment. There is flexible insulation on the outside, similar to that in ordinary cables. The electromagnetic field that allows the signal to travel from one end of the cable to the other exists only in the space between the inner and outer conductors.

Thanks to this, you can safely place the coaxial cable near the electronics, metal objects, without the risk of losing signal quality. SMA is a type of connector that plays a key role in this process. The very low resistance (50 Ω) of such elements allows the signal to freely reach the receiver without distortion and interference. SMA connector - application

SMA connectors are most often used in wireless networks , in cables transporting signals from various types of antennas (for example, to a TV antenna at home, a WiFi antenna to amplify the signal or a GPS antenna). You can use SMA sockets to mount your device on a PLC board, connect cables, or repair a damaged connector. To properly use a cable with SMA connectors, thoroughly clean the plug (preferably with compressed air) before each connection to ensure there is no dirt inside. In this way, the SMA operated should remain fully operational for approximately 500 connections.
