BLDC motor without Hall sensors and without writing control code
Pololu A89301 is a driver for a single three-phase brushless (BLDC) motor that does not need Hall sensors and works at 5.5 V to 48 V. The Allegro A89301 chip drives the motor with FOC, meaning a sinusoidal current matched to the rotor position, so the motor runs quietly and smoothly. The driver delivers up to 11 A without a heatsink.
You set the speed with an analog voltage, a PWM signal, a pulse frequency or over I2C, and the DIR and BRAKE inputs change the direction and brake the motor. The I2C connector is compatible with Qwiic and STEMMA QT, and you save the settings in the driver's memory using the manufacturer's Windows software.

Did you know?
Speed limit calculated from the poles
The driver commutes the motor at most about 1085 times per second. You can calculate the maximum speed with the formula 1085 x 60 / number of pole pairs, so a 14-pole motor (7 pairs) reaches about 9300 rpm.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to program the driver?
No. By default the speed is set by the analog voltage on the SPD input, e.g. from a potentiometer. The manufacturer's Windows software and a USB-I2C adapter are only needed to change the settings.
Will the driver handle a drone motor?
Usually not. Small drone motors run at very high speeds, and the driver commutates at most about 1085 times per second. If this limit is exceeded, the motor may suddenly stall.
Why did the motor start after I connected I2C?
The SPD/SCL line is a speed input by default. When you connect I2C, the motor may start, so disconnect it before configuring or apply a high state to BRAKE.
