From big plans to global success
WowWee came a long way before the robots we know today appeared in its product line. The origins of the brand date back to the 1980s, when two brothers (the future founders of the company) moved from Canada to Hong Kong to open their own research and development studio and create designs for manufacturing. Although the company's focus from the beginning was on toys, it wasn't until 1988 that its own brand, WowWee, was created. The late 1990s and early 2000s saw the development of remote-controlled toys - including dinosaurs and dogs - and soon work began on what would become WowWee's biggest hit: the million-selling Robosapien. The brand's website today also lists among its greatest achievements the implementation in robots of infrared and color vision, the ability to detect sound, highly developed sensory awareness, realistic imitation of animal movements, and the ability to program robots' personalities. Of course, the aforementioned solutions were implemented over the course of many subsequent years in various models of WowWee toys. Today, the brand's portfolio includes intelligent mascots with animal shapes and behaviors, as well as robotic dinosaurs, humanoids, and also pocket projectors and remote-controlled cars. WowWee products can react to gestures and voice, express emotions, make sounds, can be remotely controlled via a smartphone app, and their users can use dedicated social networking tools.
