A USB flash drive is a mobile, non-volatile storage medium. With the help of such a device, data can be transferred between computers, as well as other hardware that supports this format (for example, the Raspberry Pi). They can also be used to increase data storage space, to boot programs or operating systems (live USB function). Nowadays, pendrives with two speed standards are used: USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 (in other naming versions USB 3.1).

How to choose a device for yourself?
The most important parameters when choosing a portable flash memory device are capacity and data transfer speed. The most popular flash drive capacities are 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB. The speed of data transfer depends on the interface (USB 2.0 or USB 3.0), as well as the quality of the hardware and other factors, so the safest option is to read the technical specifications and values declared by the manufacturer. USB communication standards are backwards compatible - this means you can plug a USB 3.0 stick into a USB 2.0 port and it will work (albeit slower). It's a good idea to choose a device with a robust and practical casing (for example, one that can be attached to keys) - a memory stick without a casing will quickly become damaged, which may result in irretrievable loss of saved data. You should also pay attention to the compatibility of the chosen memory stick with your device, especially if it is less popular.
Working with portable USB memory
Although the operation of a USB flash drive is very simple, there are a few important things to remember. Just like other electronic devices, USB flash drives are susceptible to damage if exposed to moisture, extreme temperatures, dust or strong ultraviolet radiation, as well as mechanical damage. If you intend to use the device in harsh conditions, choose a model that is designed for such use (for example, waterproof). It is also worth remembering that pendrives may be a carrier for various computer viruses. In order to avoid such a threat, it is advisable to disable the possibility of automatic start-up of files from a USB memory stick in your computer and to use an anti-virus programme. You should also scan your memory stick for viruses if you are not sure of the safety of the medium, for example if someone transfers data to you using it.
