W5500 Ethernet module with RJ45 socket

Joy-IT SBC-USR-ES1 is an Ethernet module with a W5500 chip and an RJ45 socket that adds a 10/100 Mb/s network connection to an Arduino or Raspberry Pi Pico over the SPI interface. The W5500 chip has a built-in full TCP/IP stack and a 32 KB buffer, so the microcontroller does not have to handle network protocols itself. You power the module with 3.3 V, and the logic lines tolerate 5 V.

  • TCP, UDP, ICMP, IPv4, ARP, IGMP and PPPoE protocols
  • SPI clock up to 80 MHz
  • LED indicating the module status

Good choice for you?

Good choice if:

  • you want to connect an Arduino or Raspberry Pi Pico to a wired network
  • you are building a web server, a network sensor or a controller with a wired link
  • you want ready-made libraries and examples for the popular W5500 chip

Consider another option if:

  • you need wireless connectivity, because this module supports Ethernet only
  • you need several network ports, because the module has one RJ45 socket

Fun fact

Ready-made web server example

The Joy-IT manual shows how to run the WebServer example with an Arduino Uno and the Ethernet library. For the Raspberry Pi Pico, the manufacturer describes a version with CircuitPython and the Wiznet5k library.

Frequently asked questions

How to connect to Arduino Uno?

The manufacturer connects the power to 3.3 V and the SCK, MI, MO and CS lines to pins 13, 12, 11 and 10 of the Arduino Uno. After that, the Ethernet library with the WebServer example is enough.

Does it work with a Raspberry Pi Pico?

Yes, in the manual the manufacturer describes the connection to a Raspberry Pi Pico and a CircuitPython program with the Wiznet5k library. You connect the SPI lines to GPIO pins 10 to 13.

What is the link speed?

The module works in the 10BaseT and 100BaseTX standard, that is at 10 Mb/s or 100 Mb/s. Communication with the microcontroller is provided by the SPI interface with a clock up to 80 MHz.
