What is a pin expander?
The possibilities of versatile use of popular Arduino systems result largely from their modular structure. The microcomputer designer starts designing the system by selecting the main unit (main module) equipped with a control microprocessor, which, depending on the required functions and needs, is equipped with external accessories and expansion modules. The most common Arduino Shield expansion module is the pin expander. It is a module in the form of a printed circuit board or an electronic system connected to the pins of the Arduino motherboard, with which, depending on the type of Arduino Shield, it can be connected via a UART, SPI or I2C communication bus.
From screw connections to robotics
As you already know, Arduino Shield, i.e. pin expander, is an extension of the possibilities in Arduino systems, which, thanks to its diversity, will make it easier for you to construct and adapt your microcomputer to your needs. The simplest pin expander is a board equipped with screw connectors, thanks to which connecting wires to the inputs and outputs of the main unit becomes much simpler and the connection strength is greater. The screw connection module integrates with the main unit via pins. If you want to increase the current efficiency of the outputs, a module equipped with relays that can be used to control devices with a supply voltage of up to 250 VAC and switching currents of up to 15 A will be helpful. For Arduino applications in the measurement area, you have the Arduino Shield equipped with terminal and screw connectors, which makes it easier connecting temperature, humidity or pressure sensors, and resistors for calibrating each measurement channel separately in the case of the latter. The pin expander can also support many interfaces such as SPI (LCD display modules, LED), IIC (ICD display modules, I/O modules), Micro SD, SD, TLC (LED controller). If you are a fan of robotics, use the pin expander to control drives with integrated motor controllers with an output voltage of 12 V and a current efficiency of even more than 1 A.
