Design and functioning of OLED displays
The inspiration for OLED displays were LED displays, both variants are based on the same semiconductor technology. However, they differ in other parameters and quality of the displayed image. OLED displays are 100 to 500 nm thick. It is difficult to imagine such a value, so we assume that it is only 1/200 of human hair. The construction of the display is layered, usually it is 2-3 layers, two of them are responsible for sending electrons from anode to the third layer. The last layer in turn emits light. High quality polymers are used to produce the emission layer.
OLED displays work when they receive auxiliary power. It can come from different sources, e.g. from a stabilized power supply unit or battery. Electricity flows through successive layers from cathode to anode. The task of the cathode is to introduce electrons into the emission layer, the most external one. The anode in turn is responsible for removing the electron from the conductive layer. The electrons fill an electron hole, which leads to the release of energy in the form of light particles. This is the moment when the image on the OLED display is emitted. The display layers differ in chemical composition, on which the color and quality of the displayed image depends. The brightness, on the other hand, depends on current consumption, the bigger it is, the brighter the image.
How can you use the OLED display?
OLED displays have many advantages. They are characterized by very low color degradation, even if we are dealing with a large angle. In the case of LCD displays, the blackness is brightened. In OLED displays the contrast drop is practically zero, which allows to maintain high quality of emitted colors. The brightness of the image has practically no effect on the sharpness of moving parts displayed on the screen. Moreover, OLED displays are subject to a special encapsulation process, which translates into their excellent airtightness. They are very well protected against the ingress of dust and any dirt. Thanks to all these facilities OLED technology is often chosen by conscious users. We have successfully eliminated the need for auxiliary backlighting in displays, which results in lower energy consumption.
