DC power sockets differ in many parameters. The basic ones are the maximum permissible operating voltage and the maximum current that can flow through the connector . These parameters affect the shape of the plug - the more current that has to flow through it, the larger it is generally to ensure lower resistance and reduce voltage drops. The operating voltage is related to the insulation used in the connector. This is extremely important because exceeding the permissible voltage for a socket or plug may lead to a breakdown and, consequently, a short circuit, which may damage both the power supply system and the powered device.
DC socket - Power connectors with various parameters
Typical power connectors are cylindrical in shape. There is a single pin in the center and the outer part of the plug is the second pole of the DC power supply. There are no standards specifying which of these two elements should have voltage and where the ground should be, however, in recent years it has been assumed that the middle pin of a plug or socket is the so-called "hot" - there is the plus of the power supply, while the outer part of the connector is at ground level. Plugs are characterized mainly by two parameters - length and diameter. This ensures that connectors can be easily matched to each other without the need to perform more complex measurements.

DC sockets and plugs - FAQ
In the vast majority of cases, the positive (+) pole of the power supply is connected to the middle pin of the plug , and the negative (-) pole to the outer metal "sheath". However, please remember that there are exceptions to this rule (mainly in the world of music equipment).
The DC socket should be connected according to the polarity of the power supply associated with the device - usually the middle contact will be connected to the positive pole of the power supply, and the side pressure plate - to the negative pole. Many sockets also have a third contact, which allows, for example, automatic switching of the power supply between the external power supply and batteries .
