Raspberry Pi 5 8GB: Cortex-A76 2.4 GHz

Raspberry Pi 5 8GB is a mini computer with 8 GB RAM and an Arm Cortex-A76 2.4 GHz processor, which according to the manufacturer is 2 to 3 times faster than the processor in the Raspberry Pi 4. The LPDDR4X-4267 memory is enough for a smooth desktop, a browser and several services running at the same time.

The VideoCore VII 800 MHz graphics supports two 4K monitors at 60 fps over HDMI, and the PCIe 2.0 x1 connector lets you attach a fast drive through the Raspberry Pi M.2 HAT+ add-on board. The RPi 5 also has dual-band 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0 and gigabit Ethernet.

BCM2712 processor and VideoCore VII graphics

At the heart of the board is the Broadcom BCM2712 chip with four 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 2.4 GHz cores, cryptographic extensions, 512 KB of L2 cache per core and a shared 2 MB L3 cache. The whole computer fits on a board measuring 85 x 56 mm.

The VideoCore VII 800 MHz graphics supports OpenGL ES 3.1 and Vulkan, and the hardware HEVC decoder plays 4K video at 60 fps. The redesigned Raspberry Pi image signal processor works with modern cameras, which opens the RPi 5 to vision projects.

Raspberry Pi 5 8GB or another RAM version?

The Raspberry Pi 5 comes in five versions: with 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB and 16 GB of LPDDR4X-4267 memory. The processor, graphics and all connectors are the same in them, so the choice of version depends only on how many programs and services you want to run at the same time.

The 8 GB version has headroom for a desktop with a browser, a development environment and several server services at once. The Raspberry Pi 5 works with the current Raspberry Pi OS Trixie and with the Bookworm version, and older releases of the system do not support this board.

The RP1 chip: faster USB, cameras and SD card

The RP1 chip, designed by Raspberry Pi, handles most of the board's inputs and outputs. The total USB bandwidth has more than doubled, and two USB 3.0 ports work at the same time at 5 Gb/s, next to two USB 2.0 ports for a keyboard and mouse.

The two 4-lane MIPI 1.5 Gb/s connectors are interchangeable: you can connect two cameras, two displays, or one camera and one display to them. The microSD slot supports SDR104 mode, which doubles the peak performance of the memory card.

Power supply, cooling and case for the RPi 5

The manufacturer recommends a 5 V / 5 A power supply with a USB Type-C connector, e.g. the official Raspberry Pi 27 W power supply, because with a weaker power supply, e.g. one from the Raspberry Pi 4, problems may appear. The RPi 5 reaches full performance with active cooling, e.g. the Raspberry Pi Active Cooler.

The Raspberry Pi 5 does not fit the case from the Raspberry Pi 4, so choose the official case for the Raspberry Pi 5. It has a built-in fan, gives full access to the GPIO pins and lets you stack the cases on top of each other.

PCIe 2.0, Ethernet and an RTC clock

The PCIe 2.0 x1 connector supports fast peripherals, and you can attach an M.2 SSD through the M.2 HAT+ add-on board or the Argon NEO 5 M.2 NVMe case, which speeds up data transfer and system boot. Gigabit Ethernet supports PoE+ after you mount a separate PoE+ HAT.

The power button turns the board on and off without unplugging the cable, and the UART connector makes diagnostics easier. The real-time clock (RTC) keeps the date and time after you connect the RTC battery for the Raspberry Pi 5, and the 40-pin GPIO connector has the standard Raspberry Pi layout.

Is it a good choice for you?

A good choice if:

  • you need 8 GB RAM for a desktop, a browser and several services at once
  • you want to connect a fast NVMe drive through the PCIe 2.0 connector
  • you are designing a device that you will produce for years

Consider another option if:

  • you are building a simple sensor or controller: a version with less RAM is enough

What changed compared to the Raspberry Pi 4

ChangeWhat it means
Cortex-A76 2.4 GHz processor2 to 3 times higher CPU performance than in the Raspberry Pi 4
VideoCore VII 800 MHz graphicsFaster graphics, OpenGL ES 3.1 and Vulkan
RP1 chip for inputs and outputsMore than twice the total USB bandwidth
Two 4-lane MIPI 1.5 Gb/s connectorsThree times the bandwidth, for up to two cameras or displays
microSD card SDR104 modeTwice the peak performance of the card
PCIe 2.0 x1 connectorThe first in this series, e.g. for NVMe drives through an add-on board
The case from the Raspberry Pi 4 does not fitFor the RPi 5, choose a case designed for this model

Fun fact

The first full-size Raspberry Pi with its own chip

The Raspberry Pi 5 is the first full-size Raspberry Pi computer with in-house designed silicon: the RP1 chip handles most of the board's inputs and outputs. The manufacturer also declares that the Raspberry Pi 5 will remain in production until at least January 2036.

Frequently asked questions

4 GB, 8 GB or 16 GB RAM?

The Raspberry Pi 5 comes with 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB and 16 GB of LPDDR4X-4267 memory, and the rest of the specification is shared. The 8 GB version has headroom for a desktop and several services at once.

Is the power supply from the RPi 4 enough?

Not always. With a weaker power supply, problems may appear, so the manufacturer recommends a 5 V / 5 A power supply with a USB Type-C connector, e.g. the official 27 W power supply.

Does the RPi 5 fit the RPi 4 case?

No. The Raspberry Pi 5 does not fit the case from the Raspberry Pi 4, so the manufacturer recommends the official case for the Raspberry Pi 5 with a built-in fan.

Does the RPi 5 need cooling?

The manufacturer states that the Raspberry Pi 5, like most computers, reaches full performance with active cooling, e.g. with the Active Cooler or a case with a fan.

What system runs on the RPi 5?

The Raspberry Pi 5 works with the current Raspberry Pi OS Trixie and with the older Bookworm version. Releases older than Bookworm do not support the Raspberry Pi 5.

How many GPIO pins does the RPi 5 have?

The Raspberry Pi 5 has a 40-pin GPIO connector in the Raspberry Pi standard, the same as in other full-size models of this series.
