Laser welding in a workshop with a 230 V outlet
xTool MetalFab 800W is a handheld fiber laser welder for stainless steel, carbon steel and galvanized sheet up to 4 mm and for aluminum and brass up to 3 mm. It also cleans welds and cuts steel up to 3 mm, and the wire feeder is built into the housing. You plug it into a 230 V outlet.
You choose the settings on an 8-inch touchscreen with over 108 ready-made presets, and the gun weighs just 550 g. The manufacturer states that laser welding is 2 to 4 times faster than TIG and MIG welding. The heat-affected zone is as narrow as 0.05 mm, so thin sheets distort less.

What sets this model apart
Laser welder with a wire feeder in one housing and a plug for a 230 V outlet
The 800 W version has the wire feeder in the housing and draws up to 15 A, so it needs neither a separate feeder nor a special electrical installation. Keep in mind that it welds thinner materials than the 1200 W version: steel up to 4 mm instead of 5 mm, and aluminum up to 3 mm instead of 4 mm.

Three functions in one gun
You weld in continuous, spot or pulse mode: pulse mode puts in less heat and works well on thin sheets, and spot mode is good for tack welding parts beforehand. After swapping the nozzle you clean the weld up to 10 mm wide or cut steel up to 3 mm by hand, e.g. when preparing parts for welding.

Wire feeder in the welder housing
In the 800 W version the wire feeder is built into the housing, so you do not need a separate device next to the welder. It handles 0.8 mm, 1 mm, 1.2 mm and 1.6 mm wire on a spool of up to 5 kg, and you set the wire feed speed on the screen from 2 to 100 mm/s.
Thin sheets up to 1 mm and small gaps can also be welded without wire, by melting the base material alone.

The welder with the feeder weighs 35 kg and stands on four wheels, so you can easily roll it around the workshop. The gun weighs 550 g, and the 3.5 m cable gives you freedom when working on larger parts.
All you need is a 230 V outlet with a Schuko plug, and you choose the settings for the material and thickness from over 108 ready-made presets on the 8-inch touchscreen.

- This is a class 4 laser device according to EN/IEC 60825-1: everyone in the work area must wear protective goggles for a wavelength of 1080 nm, and the goggles in the kit have an OD6+ filter
- The laser emits a beam only when the nozzle touches metal connected to the device by a cable, the laser is switched on, and you hold the grip sensor and pull the trigger
- On first start-up you unlock the welder with a password after watching the safety training, and the key restricts access for bystanders
- Do not process pure copper or other highly reflective materials, provide fume extraction and use hearing protection, as the noise exceeds 90 dB at full power

A good choice if:
- you weld steel and aluminum up to 3-4 mm in a workshop or on site
- you have a regular 230 V / 16 A outlet in your workshop and do not want to modify the installation
- you want to weld faster than TIG and grind welds less

xTool commissioned SGS to test welds made with the MetalFab welder according to ISO 15614-1, the standard for qualifying welding procedures. The welds passed tensile tests, penetrant testing and metal structure examinations.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a wire feeder?
Yes. In the 800 W version the feeder is built into the housing and handles 0.8-1.6 mm wire on a spool of up to 5 kg. The kit includes 1 mm stainless steel wire and drive rollers for all diameters.
What gas do I need?
For welding you need nitrogen or argon with a purity above 99.99% at a flow of 15-30 l/min, and for titanium argon only. The cylinder, regulator and flow meter are not included.
Is a regular outlet enough?
The manufacturer states that in Europe the 800 W version runs on a 230 V / 16 A circuit. However, it recommends a separate circuit with a 20 A fuse and a cable of at least 2.5 mm², with no other high-power loads.
Can I weld without wire?
Yes. Thin sheets up to 1 mm and parts with a small gap can be welded without wire (autogenous welding), by melting the base material alone.
Does it clean rust?
Yes. The standard nozzle cleans welds up to 10 mm wide, and with the MaxClean attachment you remove rust and paint up to 45 mm wide.
How long is the warranty?
The manufacturer gives a 24-month warranty on the main components of the welder. The warranty does not cover consumables (e.g. protective nozzles) or personal protective equipment.
