Multicore cable / multi-cores as your basic building block

When designing complex sound and lighting systems, details such as multi-conductor cables are often overlooked. The market offers a huge number of different types of multicore cables, each of which is intended for a specific use. The right choice of cable provides us with a guarantee of safety and durability of the installation. Cable markings specify many of its parameters - all it takes is one glance of a specialist and you immediately know what you are dealing with.

Types of cabling

Multicore cables are widely used in every installation. They are marked with small and capital letters - first we specify the construction of the conductor. D stands for wire, L for stranded wire, and Lg stands for flexible stranded wire. Multicore cables are usually made of copper, but if we are dealing with other material, before the marking of the conductor construction there will appear the information - A for aluminium, or the letter F symbolizing steel. There is also a designation of the cable sheath placed before the above information - Y for PVC, G for rubber, and Y for polyethylene.

More letters

Another marking of multicore cables is a letter referring to the structure of the cable. The letter a stands for a cotton yarn sheath, b for insulation that can withstand high temperatures, c for non-flammable material, d for increased insulation thickness, p for a flat cable, u for an armed cable, and n for a cable with a carrying line. We may also encounter the designation of a given cable - the symbol ak stands for a battery cable, t for a flush-mounted cable, w for a high-voltage cable. The symbols jo and jp stand for contact wires - round and profile.

Labels and reality

Multicore cables have a lot of markings, but in practice the letters appear very few. For example, DY cable is a copper cable, consisting of a single wire with a PVC insulation. It is mainly used for connecting lighting and various types of control. An interesting example is the designation AsXSn - this abbreviation stands for a self-supporting power cable, made of aluminium with cross-linked polyethylene insulation. The letter n at the end indicates fire resistance. Such cables are used to supply power to devices via overhead lines.
