The most popular and most widely used on the market are electromechanical lever limit switches, which dominate mechanics and robotics. The main task of the limit switches is to detect the set position of the moving element and react when a specific position is reached by turning the power on or off. Switches, in addition to their basic operation, may have many additional functions, e.g. signaling.
Division of limit switches
There are many types of division that can be used. When distinguishing the types of limit switches, it is worth starting with the criterion of how they detect obstacles. Electromechanical - the most common - have the simplest structure and are reliable under normal conditions. They detect an obstacle most often using a movable lever connected to an electrical switch located in the housing.
Types of limit switches
The next type is a magnetic sensor. Instead of levers, they use magnets. When they come closer to each other, a current is induced, which is perceived as approaching the obstacle. These types of limit switches are particularly precise, but susceptible to electromagnetic interference. The last type are optical sensors. The system consisting of a receiver and a transmitter is susceptible to dirt, which may cause it to malfunction. These sensors are usually used in robotics, which requires particular precision and error-free operation.

A limit switch is an electronic element used to detect an extreme position, for example a moving part on a rail, and then control various functions (for example, turning off motors or changing the direction of movement).
After checking whether the switch shows no signs of mechanical damage, you can connect it to a controller with rated power values and check whether it responds properly. Signal differences from the values provided by the manufacturer may indicate component damage.
Limit switches are connected similarly to other electronic components of this type. The elements are most often equipped with three pins (C, NO, NC). When connecting limit switches, remember to maintain the appropriate current and voltage parameters.
