How to detect hydrogen sulfide? What does hydrogen sulfide smell like?

Hydrogen sulfide H2S is a gas that is not so easy to detect. Only at high concentrations will our sense of smell react to its presence, because its smell resembles the stench of rotten eggs. It is dangerous even in small amounts - exposure to low concentrations of H2S may lead to irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract, while long-term or intense exposure to higher concentrations may result in more serious health problems, including damage to the nervous system.

Hydrogen sulfide is naturally produced as a result of the decomposition of organic matter by bacteria in anaerobic conditions, which occurs, for example, in swamps, at the bottom of reservoirs, in mines, and in sewage pipes. Industrially, H2S is a by-product in many processes such as petroleum refining, gas purification, pulp and paper production, as well as in food industry processes related to protein processing. Due to its properties, hydrogen sulfide is also used in the chemical industry, including: for the production of sulfur and sulfuric acid and as a component of some decontamination processes.
