5-way navigation switch
Joy-IT COM-5WS is a board with a five-way navigation switch: up, down, left, right and press, complemented by two buttons, SET and RST. A common ground pin closes all the contacts, so inputs with an internal pull-up resistor are enough on the microcontroller. The board works with a voltage from 3.3 V to 5 V.

Built-in resistors are enough
Joy-IT connects all the switch contacts to a common ground pin. Thanks to this, in the examples for Raspberry Pi and Arduino, inputs with an internal pull-up resistor are enough, without additional components.

Frequently asked questions
How do I connect it to an Arduino?
You connect each direction and button to a separate digital pin set as an input with a pull-up resistor. In the example the manufacturer uses pins D13 to D7.
Does it work with a Raspberry Pi?
Yes, the manufacturer provides an example with the gpiozero library, in which you connect the switch outputs to GPIO pins. The board works with a voltage from 3.3 V to 5 V.
How many pins does it use?
The board has eight pins: common ground, five directions, and the SET and RST buttons. On the microcontroller you will therefore use seven digital inputs.
