Negative temperature coefficient thermistors

Our offer mainly includes NTC thermistors (with a negative temperature coefficient) - each of the individual components sold separately has an error tolerance of 5%. Depending on the model, the resistances range from 1 kΩ to 100 kΩ. We also offer thermistors with long cables and ready-made temperature sensors (on laminated boards).

Thermistor - what is it?

A thermistor is a type of resistor made of materials that make the component's resistance value dependent on the temperature that acts on it. Copper, aluminum, nickel, vanadium, lithium or manganese oxides are used to make such elements. Depending on the selected mixture, thermistors of different types and with different resistances can be created.

NTC thermistors (negative temperature coefficient)

There are three types - the most popular is NTC (negative temperature coefficient). It has a negative temperature coefficient, whereby higher temperatures result in decreasing resistance (in other words, resistance decreases). In turn, lower temperature increases the resistance).

NTC thermistors (positive temperature coefficient)

PTC (positive temperature coefficient) thermistors work exactly the opposite: they have a positive temperature coefficient, which means that they achieve higher resistance as the temperature increases.

CTR thermistor (critical temperature resistor)

The last type is CTR (critical temperature resistor) - these are thermistors that are characterized by sudden jumps in resistance (depending on the material used, the reaction is an increase or decrease in resistance).

Standard resistors also depend on the temperature value parameter (temperature function), but the degree of dependence is much higher in the case of thermistors. In an ordinary resistor, temperature-dependent resistance is an undesirable characteristic.

The use of thermistors

Thermistors are passive elements used in electronic circuits that allow you to easily and quickly determine the ambient temperature. They are a very cheap, durable and precise tool for such applications.

All these advantages make them widely used in electronic thermometers, for measuring the temperature of components and operating fluids in motor vehicles, in refrigerators, ovens, microwaves and all such home appliances where temperature measurement is necessary.

It is also an excellent learning tool for beginners in electronics or for students of fields related to electronics (e.g. automation and robotics or computer science). For example, a thermistor can act as a kind of analog sensor connected to a development board (e.g. Raspberry Pi ), which will provide appropriate signals to devices such as a fan or air conditioner based on room temperature readings.

Thermistors are also used in devices as a tool to compensate for changes in resistance, for example as a result of increased temperature rising on a low-frequency generator.

What products will you find in this category?

THROUGH HOLE THERMISTORS

Our offer mainly includes NTC (negative temperature coefficient) thermistors, i.e. those that have a negative temperature coefficient. This means that the higher the ambient temperature, the lower the resistance of the thermistor.

We have a wide selection of small thermistors sold as a single element intended for through-hole installation (with legs approximately 30 mm long), but we also offer elements of this type equipped with a long cable and ready-made electronic systems with built-in thermistors.

They are sold separately and have an error tolerance of 5%. Their resistance values vary depending on the product - we offer thermistors with resistances of 1 kΩ, 2.2 kΩ, 5 kΩ, 10 kΩ, 22 kΩ, 47 kΩ and 100 kΩ.

THERMISTORS WITH WIRES

We also offer a thermistor with a resistance of 110 kΩ, which is equipped with a cable approximately 160 mm long and with a screw connector with an M6 thread. This type of thermistor may be particularly useful when an electronics engineer wants to precisely control the temperature of an object that is made of a material that conducts heat well.

The thermistor can be easily attached, for example, to a heating element of the engine to measure its temperature continuously. We also offer thermistors equipped with long, two-wire cables of 300 cm, 100 cm or 50 cm.

An example of a product of this type is a thermistor with a resistance of 10 kΩ (with a tolerance of 1%) and a diameter of 5 mm, connected to a meter long cable terminated with stripped wires. The product's measurement range is from -30°C to 280°C.

THERMISTORS IN ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS

Our offer also includes ready-made temperature sensors, ready to be connected to any electronic system. Each of them is equipped with thermistors that can measure temperatures from -25°C to 125°C.

The electronic systems are prepared so that the user can conveniently use the pins and connect it to the power supply (5 V) and to the analog input of any microcontroller (for example, to the Arduino development board). Reading its status will be equivalent to reading the current temperature value. We encourage you to familiarize yourself with the entire range of the sensors and electronic sensors category, which includes, among others: gas sensors , air purity sensors , light and color sensors , distance sensors and many others.

Thermistors - FAQ

A thermistor is an electronic component that acts as a resistor . Its resistance value is temperature dependent. It is used as a current limiter - similarly to a fuse. You can find it in the microwave, in the thermostat or when measuring the temperature under the hood of your car.

At Botland you will find temperature sensors ready to be connected in an electronic system. Each of them is equipped with thermistors that are able to measure temperature in very large ranges. The electronic circuits are prepared in such a way that you can conveniently use the pins and connect them to the power supply and analog input of any microcontroller.
