Product description: Arduino Modulino Extender - I2C signal amplifier - LTC4311 - Qwiic - ABX00174

The Modulino Extender is a ready-to-use module from the Arduino Modulino family, designed to extend I2C communication beyond the typical limitations of short connections. Based on the LTC4311 I2C accelerator, it improves signal quality on the SDA and SCL lines, enabling stable connections between remote nodes, sensors, and actuators. The module operates entirely in hardware—it has no I2C address, requires no configuration , and uses no special commands. Simply place it on the bus, preferably near the controller or before a longer cable run, to improve transmission reliability . This is a convenient solution for Arduino projects where sensors or Modulino modules must operate in different parts of a housing, mock-up, educational installation, or IoT system.

Main features of the Modulino Extender

  • LTC4311 I2C Accelerator : Improves SDA and SCL signal quality, supporting stable communication over longer cable runs
  • Up to 30m Range : The module has been tested with Cat5e and Cat6 STP/FTP cables up to 30m
  • No I2C address : works transparently on the bus and does not occupy an address, so it does not cause conflicts with other devices
  • Zero-configuration operation : no additional libraries, settings, or changes to the project code required
  • Qwiic Connectivity : Quickly connect the module to Arduino boards and Qwiic-compatible devices
  • Modulino Compatibility : Works with other Arduino Modulino modules in daisy-chain configurations
  • Low power consumption : typical current consumption is around 200 µA
  • Compact design : small 41 x 25.36 mm board size for easy installation in enclosures, installations and prototypes

Connectivity, pinouts and Arduino compatibility

The Modulino Extender operates as a transparent I2C pass-through bus element, so it doesn't require separate addressing and doesn't change the way it communicates with connected devices. Qwiic connectors or solder pads with 3.3V, GND, SDA, and SCL lines can be used to connect to the main board and modules. The module is compatible with the Arduino UNO R4 WiFi , Arduino UNO Q , and select Arduino Nano boards, including the Nano 33 IoT, Nano 33 BLE, Nano RP2040 Connect, Nano ESP32, and Nano Matter. For Nano boards, the Arduino Nano Connector Carrier provides convenient connection. The manufacturer recommends Cat5e or Cat6 STP/FTP cables for bus extension, which help maintain signal integrity in larger installations. The module also works with standard I2C and Qwiic devices operating at 3.3V logic.

Programming and starting the I2C amplifier

The Modulino Extender is a fully hardware-based module, so it doesn't require programming, installing libraries, or adding special code features . It doesn't have its own I2C address and isn't visible as a classic peripheral on the bus, as its purpose is to improve the signal's electrical parameters. In practice , simply connect it to the I2C bus, preferably close to the controller or before a long run of cable , and then use the other modules as before. Projects can still be created in the Arduino IDE, Arduino CLI, Arduino Cloud, or environments supporting MicroPython, depending on the motherboard used and the connected modules . The Arduino Modulino library can be used to control other nodes in this series, but the Extender itself doesn't require it to function.
