The M5Stack CoreS3 Thread BR is a complete solution for building and testing modern IoT networks based on the Thread, Matter, and ZigBee standards. The kit consists of a CoreS3 controller using the ESP32-S3 chip and a Gateway H2 module with an ESP32-H2 microcontroller operating as an OpenThread RCP (Radio Co-Processor). This allows the module to function as a powerful Thread border router, integrating IEEE 802.15.4 networks with WiFi and Ethernet infrastructure. The CoreS3 Thread BR offers extensive multimedia and sensor features, including a 320 x 240 px IPS touchscreen, a 0.3 MPx camera, microphones, a Hi-Fi speaker, a proximity sensor, a real-time clock, and a 9-axis IMU . Built-in Grove connectors (HY2.0-4P) and an M5-Bus interface allow for easy expansion of the project with additional modules and sensors. The housing adapted for mounting on a DIN rail makes the set ideal for industrial applications and building automation.

Thread Border Router pinouts, interfaces, and communication capabilities
The M5Stack CoreS3 Thread BR offers extensive communication capabilities and a comprehensive set of interfaces for IoT and building automation projects. The ESP32-S3 main controller provides 2.4 GHz WiFi connectivity, while the ESP32-H2 module supports the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, used by Thread, Matter, and ZigBee networks. This allows the module to act as a bridge between a local network and energy-efficient IoT devices. The housing features two HY2.0-4P connectors, compatible with Grove modules and the M5Stack ecosystem . Additionally, an M5-Bus bus is provided, providing access to UART, I2C, SPI, GPIO, and I2S audio interfaces. The module also features a microSD card slot , a USB-OTG port, and HVIN power connectors supporting voltages from 9 V to 24 V. Built-in sensors, such as the BMI270 IMU , BMM150 magnetometer, LTR-553ALS-WA proximity sensor, and BM8563 RTC , enable the creation of extensive monitoring, automation, and intelligent installation systems without the need for additional modules.

The CoreS3 Thread BR was designed with IoT developers and system integrators in mind. The manufacturer provides support for the ESP-IDF framework, enabling the creation of advanced applications for ESP32-S3 and ESP32-H2 devices. The module works with the OpenThread framework, Matter SDK , and Espressif libraries for building Thread Border Router gateways. OpenThread RCP support allows you to create your own border routers, communication bridges, and building automation systems compliant with the modern Matter standard. Programming is performed via a USB-OTG port, and additional Flash and PSRAM memory enables the execution of network applications, local servers, and edge AI systems. The kit is suitable for learning Thread and ZigBee technologies as well as for creating professional prototypes of smart home devices, data concentrators, and industrial monitoring systems.
