Large format 3D printing with one head

Original Prusa XL+ with one head is the second generation of the large format Prusa 3D printer with an automatic tool changer and a 360 x 360 x 360 mm build volume. The changer parks one toolhead and picks up the next one with its own material, and the 46.7 l build volume fits large parts in one piece or a whole series of smaller models on one bed at the same time.

The printer has one toolhead, but the same frame and electronics as the multi-head versions, so you can add more later with the manufacturer's upgrade kit, without replacing the printer.

What sets this model apart

A large format printer you can upgrade to five heads

The one-head version gives you the full 360 x 360 x 360 mm build volume and the same tool changer frame as the five-head version, which you can upgrade later without replacing the printer. Keep in mind that multi-material printing starts only with the second head, so if you plan it right away, choose the two-head version, which prints the model and supports from two materials.

One head today, more after an upgrade

To start, you get the full build volume and one Nextruder toolhead, which works well for large single-material prints: mock-ups, props, fixtures and enclosures. The frame and electronics are the same as in the five-head version, so you can easily upgrade it later with a kit.

  • You can upgrade the printer to two or five heads with a kit in one afternoon
  • You swap a nozzle in minutes to 0.25 mm for details or 0.8 mm for fast printing
  • The filament sensor pauses the print when the spool runs out and waits for a new one
  • After a power outage, the printer resumes printing where it stopped

Botland is a reseller of Prusa 3D printers in Poland. Buying from us means original equipment from a warehouse inside the country and fast technical support. We also offer a professional service in Poland and original spare parts.

Pin-free calibration and smoother walls

In the first Prusa XL, toolheads were aligned by hand with a mechanical pin. The XL+ measures toolhead offsets with an electronic sensor, and the first layer is calibrated by the Loadcell sensor, which uses the nozzle as a probe, so you do not set the nozzle-to-bed distance.

  • 1.5 mm GT belts reduce fine, repeating patterns on large smooth walls
  • New toolhead cooling improves overhangs, and extra fans cool the electronics
  • A wiper cleans each nozzle before printing
  • Printing is 10-15% faster than on the Prusa XL, also thanks to the new 1.5 mm GT belts

Large prints on an ordinary workbench

The bed consists of 16 separately controlled heating zones, so the printer heats only the zones under the print, which limits warping and energy use for small models. Despite the 360 mm build volume in every axis, the XL+ fits on an ordinary workbench and draws 235 W on average when printing with PETG from a standard outlet, with no three-phase installation.

  • Fully offline operation: slicing, printing and firmware updates without a cloud account
  • Ethernet as standard, and the WiFi module can be physically removed
  • Open source firmware and the free PrusaSlicer
  • Any 1.75 mm filament, with no chips and no subscriptions

Is it the right choice for you?

A good choice if you:

  • print large parts from a single material: mock-ups, props, fixtures and enclosures
  • want to enter the XL+ platform at the lowest possible cost and add toolheads later
  • need a 360 x 360 x 360 mm build volume without splitting models into parts

Consider another option if you:

Fun fact

A toolchanger without electromagnets

The toolheads of the Prusa XL are held by a kinematic coupler that works without electromagnets or any other active elements. Sensors confirm that a toolhead has been swapped correctly. In 2021 Prusa reported more than half a million tool changes in internal tests without a single hitch. The changer supports up to five toolheads per printer.

Frequently asked questions

How does XL+ differ from XL?

The XL+ has automatic toolhead offset calibration with a sensor instead of a pin, new cooling, a nozzle wiper and 1.5 mm GT belts, and it prints 10-15% faster. The build volume, tool changer and materials are unchanged.

What is the XL+ build volume?

The build volume is 360 x 360 x 360 mm (46.7 l), about 3 times more than in the CORE One+ and 1.5 times more than in the CORE One L+, for large one-piece parts.

Prusa XL+ or CORE One L+?

The CORE One L+ is an enclosed single-nozzle printer with a build volume of about 30 l. The XL+ has over 50% more, 46.7 l, and up to five toolheads in one job, so it suits the largest parts and multi-material printing better.

Can I add more toolheads later?

Yes. Every XL+ has the same frame and electronics, so going from one to two or five toolheads needs the manufacturer's upgrade kit and takes one afternoon.

Do I need an enclosure?

No, for PLA and PETG prints. An enclosure helps with large ASA and ABS parts, and for PC and nylon the manufacturer recommends the heated Enclosure for Prusa XL+.

Is a cloud account required?

No. The printer works fully offline: slicing in PrusaSlicer, printing and firmware updates do not require the internet. Remote monitoring via Prusa Connect is optional.
