Step-down converters are pulse inverters whose operation is based on cyclical connection and disconnection of the coil to the power source. It is an electronic circuit whose task is to lower the input voltage. With a step-down converter, many devices can work properly and operate steadily and for a long time without failure. Step-down converters should have effective protection against excessive temperature and also against excessive voltage. It is thanks to such protection that we can safely use the device and thus work with electronics. Our offer includes step-down converters which differ in technical parameters and size. Principle of the step-down converter
Step-down converters act as stabilizers and are a much more powerful alternative for them. That is why they are so popular. The task of linear stabilizers is to maintain a constant output voltage, which is possible thanks to additional elements, among which very often is a transistor. The output voltage is controlled by the control system. If necessary, it additionally corrects the voltage, which translates into no power supply interference. At the same time, you have to reckon with the impossibility of changing the voltage and the surpluses, which are converted into heat.
The principle of the step-down converter is simpler. The key element is a coil that is cyclically energized. The voltage boost is achieved by adding the voltage in the coil to the input. A lowering system is created in the opposite situation. For the system to work properly, however, the coil must be charged with electricity. During this time, you cannot supply power to the receiver that is connected to the output. This is because otherwise the output voltage could fluctuate.
Where are step-down converters used?
Step-down converters are used to convert constant voltage. They are characterized by very good efficiency and low power losses, which is their main advantage. For this reason the converters are perfect for all systems that are powered by batteries. Their high efficiency causes them to heat up slightly, unlike stabilizers, which convert the resulting excess voltage into heat. You should pay attention to the supply voltage. A better solution is high voltage and the possibility to lower it if necessary than low voltage and then the need to raise it. This is because raising the voltage is usually more effective and efficient than lowering it.
Parameters of the converters
Like any device, the step-down converter also has specific parameters that are crucial for its efficiency and performance. The input and output voltage range and the maximum output current must be considered. There are models in which it is possible to set the output voltage value by yourself. A miniature size potentiometer is used for this purpose. The selected type of inverter is also important. It may turn out that it will generate a fixed output voltage, but its supply voltage is already required slightly higher. For the maximum output current, manufacturers usually give a value for optimal operating conditions.
