Designing a new device often requires very advanced work. Experienced designers perfectly understand the phenomenon of prototypes, i.e. a prototype of a device for the right one. This is what we start every project with. We can decide to design a new device, but you have to be aware of the difficult, hard and advanced work. For some people, high costs are also an obstacle, which are associated with it. The alternative is a universal PCB, with which we can check and test the electronics. Universal boards differ in construction and size. Its choice must not be accidental, but should depend on the electronic elements used in this particular circuit. We will choose another board for a simple circuit, and another for a more complicated one. Universal boards dedicated to prototyping differ in the spacing of soldering fields. The most common is 2.54 mm spacing, otherwise marked 100 mils. This is the distance between mounting holes for individual electronic components, which include capacitors, displays, resistors, goldpin connectors and LEDs. You can also opt for boards with SMD raster fields, which correspond to the most common circuits of surface mount components. However, universal prototype PCBs are not suitable for all projects and we will not be able to use them everywhere. When it comes to printed circuit boards, they are suitable for soldering all kinds of electronic circuits regardless of the voltage, high or low they work with. When it comes to PCBs, however, we are dealing with small distances between the paths, so it is impossible for them to work efficiently at high voltage. At the same time, it is important to be aware that the width of the paths affects the limited ability to carry higher currents. When choosing a PCB for prototyping, you have to take these factors into account to choose the best option for your project.
Design of the universal board and its key elements
Universal boards have different construction, the elements that have been used in them, as well as the size and location of individual components. Most often you can find boards with two types of tracks. The first one is a short path, which includes several soldering fields. The second one is a long path that goes along the edge of the board and contains from several to several dozen soldering fields. As far as their use is concerned, the shorter ones are suitable for connections between successive leads of the circuit elements. Longer paths act as power supply busbars, it concerns ground and supply voltage. If we choose the universal boards of larger sizes, the rails can be connected with each other, which increases the number of pins in a given network. The tracks in such a board can also be used separately for several different supply voltages.

The boards work well in both simple and more advanced projects, but special attention should be paid to the voltage of the electronic system.
