Internet of Things - a revolution of the second decade of the 21st century
IoT, or Internet of Things, is a term encompassing a variety of devices and systems that, as part of their basic functioning, connect automatically to the Internet and use data transmission to perform specific functions. IoT technology is developing intensively in many fields at the same time, and it includes systems of intelligent cities and vehicles, household appliances controlled and supervised by their owners via mobile applications and/or web browsers from anywhere in the world. It also includes various types of mobile and wearable gadgets that in various ways are supposed to help us in our daily lives. What is important, in spite of the name, IoT technologies are not limited to the use of strictly computer links (WiFi and Ethernet) - more and more importance is attached to the new standards of energy-efficient, low-power transmission of small portions of data (e.g. LoRa link), which becomes crucial in the construction of distributed measurement networks using battery-powered sensors and wireless network nodes.
RAK Wireless - a new player in the IoT market
It will come as a surprise to some consumers of RAK Wireless products that the company was founded - like hundreds of other IoT companies - in China's Shenzen province, which serves as Asia's Silicon Valley. The factory was launched in June 2014, and in just six collegiate years the brand has added an impressive number of wireless modules, base boards, sensors and various accessories to its portfolio. The company's flagship product is a modular system called WisBlock, the heart of which is the small but powerful WisBlock Core module - based on a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M4 core processor clocked at 64 MHz and equipped with 1 MB of Flash memory and 256 kB of RAM. The processor (Nordic nRF52840) cooperates with SX1262 transceiver from Semtech, realizing long-range communication in low-power LoRa standard. The dimensions of the miniature computer are just 30 mm x 20 mm, and secure mounting is provided by four mounting holes, located in the corners of the PCB. Importantly, the WisBlock system is based on open-source embedded software, giving system integrators and engineers full access to the original code.
WisBlock ecosystem - a complete solution for industrial, consumer and scientific applications
As part of the WisBlock system, RAK Wireless offers - in addition to the WisBlock Core module itself - a range of sensor modules, expansion caps and installation accessories. In the former group, the manufacturer offers modules such as RAK1901 (temperature and humidity sensor), RAK1902 (atmospheric pressure sensor), RAK1903 (illumination sensor), RA1904 (3-axis MEMS accelerometer) or finally RAK1910 (GPS geolocation module). The WisBlock ecosystem also includes a number of I/O overlays (WisBlock I/O), the WisBlock Base board, as well as compatible enclosures - including the hermetic RAKBox-B2 enclosure, featuring a metal mounting plate and... a solar panel to power the module.
