True RMS multimeter for installations and electronics
Velleman DVM040 is a handheld True RMS universal multimeter with CAT III 1000 V and CAT IV 600 V safety ratings for work on electrical installations and in electronics. It measures AC/DC voltage and current, resistance, capacitance, inductance, frequency and temperature.
The NCV detector signals voltage in a wire without touching it with a probe. The backlit 2000-count display is complemented by REL and MAX/MIN modes and a HOLD function that freezes the reading.

Practical applications
Electrical installations. The CAT III category covers distribution boards, lighting circuits and fixed equipment, while CAT IV also covers measurements at the primary supply level. The NCV detector and the live wire test help you find a live conductor.
Equipment servicing and electronics. The multimeter measures capacitance up to 100 mF, inductance up to 20 H and frequency up to 10 MHz. The continuity test sounds a buzzer for resistance below 100 Ω, and the diode test shows the approximate forward voltage of a diode.
Temperature measurement. The TP80 probe included in the set measures temperature from -20 °C to 1000 °C, and the result can also be displayed in degrees Fahrenheit (from -4 °F to 1832 °F).

What CAT IV really means
CAT categories according to the EN 61010-1 standard describe how strong overvoltages can occur at the measurement point, e.g. after a lightning strike on a power line. For equipment whose supply lines run outside the building, overhead or underground, the manual requires a CAT IV multimeter, and the Velleman DVM040 meets this requirement at voltages up to 600 V.

What does True RMS mean in the Velleman DVM040 multimeter?
The multimeter shows the RMS value of AC voltage and current in the 40 Hz to 400 Hz band.
What test leads come with the DVM040?
TLM80 leads, 1 m long, rated for voltages up to 1000 V. With the protective caps on the probes you can measure in CAT IV, and without them, for example, at a wall socket (CAT II).
How is the DVM040 multimeter powered?
By a 9 V battery (6F22). The multimeter switches off automatically after about 15 minutes, and the backlight turns off after 10 s.
