Handheld 3D scanner with laser and infrared
The M1 Ultra combines a blue laser for accurate part measurements with infrared for scanning people and large objects, and sends data by cable or over WiFi 6.
Elegoo M1 Ultra: laser and infrared
Elegoo M1 Ultra is a handheld 3D scanner with three blue laser modes and infrared. It measures with accuracy of up to 0.02 mm and works wirelessly over WiFi 6. You can scan objects from 5 x 5 x 5 mm to 4000 x 4000 x 4000 mm, from tiny parts to a car.
The scanner weighs 511 g with the battery and has a 3-inch touchscreen, where you check the distance to the object and change settings. You turn the point cloud into a model in ELEGOO Scan software on a Windows or macOS computer, and you can save the finished file as STL, OBJ, PLY or ASC.

What sets this model apart
Laser and infrared in one scanner
The M1 Ultra switches between a blue laser for measuring parts with accuracy of up to 0.02 mm and infrared for fast scanning of people and large objects without markers. Keep in mind that processing scans requires a computer with an NVIDIA card with at least 6 GB of memory or a Mac with an Apple M2 chip or newer.

Three laser modes and an infrared mode
Four modes for different objects
The mode with 34 crossing blue laser lines quickly scans larger surfaces, 7 parallel lines capture fine details, and a single line reaches into deep holes. The manufacturer recommends the laser for machine parts, jewelry and complex surfaces, usually together with reflective markers.
The near-infrared mode with a wavelength of 850 nm tracks the object by shape and texture, so it needs no markers and suits scanning people, toys, sculptures and large items. In this mode the single-shot field reaches up to 1121 x 960 mm, and the working distance is from 170 mm to 1200 mm.
From scan to model in ELEGOO Scan
The scanner sends data to ELEGOO Scan software, which with one click removes noise from the point cloud, creates a mesh, repairs it, fills holes and smooths surfaces. You scan hard-to-reach areas separately, and the software merges them with the main scan automatically or manually.
The scanner captures colors and textures with 24-bit depth, so the model keeps the look of the original. You can save the finished file as STL for 3D printing, OBJ with texture, or PLY and ASC for further point cloud processing.

Scan preview on the scanner screen
Scanning over WiFi 6 or by cable
In WiFi mode the scanner connects to the computer wirelessly and runs on a replaceable battery for about 1.5 hours, and a spare battery is included. The laser then reaches up to 60 frames per second at a resolution of 1520 x 1200 px, and the scanner screen shows a scan preview.
Over a USB 3.0 cable the laser runs at up to 100 frames per second, and you also use the cable to connect the scanner to the computer for calibration. The manufacturer states that the blue laser scans black and metal surfaces without matting spray, and outdoors it works in lighting of up to 110,000 lx.
Calibration and stable tracking
Before the first scan you calibrate the scanner on the glass plate from the set, connecting it by cable to a computer running ELEGOO Scan. The manufacturer recommends calibrating again after transport, after a break of more than 30 days and after a large change in temperature.
Eight blue-white LEDs and 4 infrared LEDs help recognize object features and markers, which reduces tracking loss. The dense 850 nm infrared pattern also makes it easier to scan smooth surfaces made of metal, plastic and ceramics.

Is it a good choice for you?
A good choice if:
- you scan parts for reverse engineering and 3D printing with accuracy of up to 0.02 mm
- you want to scan people and sculptures in infrared without sticking on markers
- you need a wireless scanner with a replaceable battery and WiFi 6
Consider another option if:
- you do not have a computer with an NVIDIA card with 6 GB of memory or a Mac with an M2 chip
Fun fact
A lens made of seven glass elements
The M1 Ultra lens consists of 7 elements made entirely of glass, and the cameras have a global shutter that captures the whole frame at once. The blue laser lines with a wavelength of 450 nm are as thin as 0.1 mm, which helps capture sharp edges.

Frequently asked questions
Does it work without a computer?
No. The scanner sends data to ELEGOO Scan software on a Windows or macOS computer, and the scan preview on the scanner screen is available only in WiFi mode.
Can it scan a face and a person?
Yes. For scanning faces and figures the manufacturer recommends the infrared mode, which needs no markers and is safe for the eyes.
Do black surfaces need matting?
Usually not, because the blue laser scans black and metal surfaces without matting spray. For matte black, rubber and velour the manufacturer recommends a longer exposure or a matting spray.
How long does it run on the battery?
The scanner works for about 1.5 hours on one charge, and a spare battery is included. It charges to 80 % in about 1.5 hours and to full in about 2 hours.
What computer is needed?
The minimum is a 7th generation Intel Core i7, an NVIDIA card with 6 GB of memory and 16 GB RAM, or a Mac with an M2 chip. The manufacturer recommends an RTX 4060 card and 32 GB RAM.
What formats can it save the scanned model in?
ELEGOO Scan software saves the model in STL, OBJ, PLY and ASC formats. For single-color 3D printing STL is enough, and OBJ keeps the color texture of the scan.
