MQ-5 LPG and natural gas sensor

Joy-IT SEN-MQ5-V2 is a board with a semiconductor MQ-5 sensor that detects LPG, propane, methane and butane at concentrations from 50 ppm to 10,000 ppm. The board has an analog output from 0 V to 5 V and a digital output with a threshold set by a potentiometer, so you get an alarm signal without an additional circuit. You power the sensor with 5 V.

  • For detecting gas leaks and building a gas alarm
  • Power LED and status LED
  • 2.54 mm goldpin connector and Molex PicoBlade connector

Good choice for you?

Good choice if:

  • you are building a gas alarm or LPG leak detector in a microcontroller project
  • you need a digital output right away with a threshold set by a potentiometer
  • you work with an Arduino, which has analog inputs and a 5 V supply

Consider another option if:

  • you want to detect alcohol rather than flammable gases: choose Joy-IT SEN-MQ3-V2
  • you need a certified sensor for personal safety, because this is a module for electronics projects

Fun fact

Burn-in before the first measurement

For first use the MQ-5 sensor needs 48 to 168 hours of continuous operation to stabilize the sensing element. After that, the manufacturer recommends taking a reference measurement in clean air and repeating the procedure after a break of several weeks.

Frequently asked questions

How does the digital output work?

When the gas concentration exceeds the threshold, the DOUT pin goes low and the red status LED signals detection. You set the threshold with the potentiometer on the board.

How long does it need to start?

After each power-on the sensor heats up for 10 to 15 minutes before it gives a reliable result. For first use the manufacturer recommends a burn-in period of 48 to 168 hours.

Does it work with a Raspberry Pi?

Yes, but the Raspberry Pi has no analog inputs and works with 3.3 V logic. The manufacturer connects the sensor through an ADC converter and a logic level converter.
