Weather measured with no moving parts and no funnel
SenseCAP S700-A is a 7-in-1 weather station that measures temperature, humidity, pressure, wind speed and direction, light intensity and, using a radar, rainfall. The radar estimates rainfall from the scattering of electromagnetic waves, so the station has no funnel or tipping bucket, and the measurement range reaches 300 mm/h.
It sends data over a wire through RS485 with the Modbus-RTU protocol, a popular way of reading sensors in automation, or through SDI-12, a standard for connecting environmental sensors to data loggers. To send data over a LoRaWAN network, meaning a long-range, low-power radio network, you connect it to the SenseCAP S2100 logger, and for transmission over a 4G mobile network to the SenseCAP Sensor Hub 4G logger.

What sets this model apart
Rainfall measured by radar up to 300 mm/h
The S700-A has the same set of sensors as the SenseCAP S700 V2, but it measures rainfall with a radar instead of an optical sensor, so it covers heavier downpours and gives the result with a higher resolution. Keep in mind that the S700-A measures light intensity, not solar radiation and sunshine duration: for those, choose the S700-B or S700-C.

Ultrasonic wind and a heater for frost
The station measures wind speed and direction with ultrasound, meaning from the transit time of sound waves between transducers, so it has no rotor or vane that could jam. The sensor measures wind up to 60 m/s in standard mode and up to 75 m/s in extended mode.
The heater with a thermostat runs from a separate 24 V supply and switches on when the temperature drops below 5 °C. You change the configuration, such as the Modbus address and baud rate, through the USB Type-C cable from the kit, and you mount the station on a mast or on a platform with the SenseCAP ONE mounting bracket.

The ultrasonic wind sensor in the S700-A measures up to 75 m/s in extended mode and withstands gusts of up to 80 m/s, meaning 288 km/h. The manufacturer states that SenseCAP ONE series sensors went through 6 reliability tests before launch, including wind calibration in a wind tunnel.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the S700-A and the S700 V2?
The S700-A measures rainfall with a radar in the range from 0 mm/h to 300 mm/h with a resolution of 0.01 mm/h, while the S700 V2 uses an optical sensor in the range from 0 mm/h to 200 mm/h. The other sensors, outputs and power supply are the same.
How do I send data over LoRaWAN?
Connect the station with an M12 cable to the SenseCAP S2100 logger, which reads the data over RS485 and sends it over a LoRaWAN network. To receive the data you need a LoRaWAN gateway or access to a public LoRaWAN network.
How do I power the heater?
The heater needs a separate 24 V power supply, ideally 24 V / 1 A. Place the heater power supply no more than 3 m from the station, and if you extend the cable, the distance should not exceed 5 m.
What is the default Modbus address of the S700-A station?
The default Modbus address of the S700-A station is 20, and communication runs at 9600 bps in the 8N1 format. You can change the address and the speed in the configuration.
How do I configure the station?
Connect the station to a computer with the included USB Type-C cable. In the configuration program you check the readings and change the Modbus address, baud rate and other parameters.
