Product description: Fermion - CH4 methane sensor - MEMS - 1-10000 ppm - DFRobot SEN0565

A compact sensor manufactured by DFRobot that allows you to measure the concentration of methane CH4 . The detection range is from 1 ppm to 10,000 ppm . Moreover, the sensor is made using MEMS technology, thanks to which it is characterized by low energy consumption, its current consumption does not exceed 20 mA, and the module lifespan is estimated at about 5 years . Methane has a significant impact on climate change, which is why it is so important to monitor emissions of this gas and look for methods to effectively reduce it. These activities are crucial in global projects to protect the environment and fight climate change.

What is methane and where is it found?

Methane, known by the chemical formula CH4, is a colorless, odorless gas that is the main component of natural gas. It is the simplest hydrocarbon and consists of one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms. Methane is also a greenhouse gas that has the ability to absorb infrared radiation; its greenhouse potential is much higher than that of carbon dioxide (CO2), even though it stays in the atmosphere for a much shorter time.

Methane is used as a fuel (natural gas) for heating houses, generating electricity and as a raw material in the chemical industry for the production of ammonia, methanol and other chemical compounds. The sources of methane emissions caused by human activity are primarily agriculture (mainly cattle breeding), extraction and transport of natural gas and crude oil, as well as landfills, where methane is produced in the process of decomposition of organic material.

Special features of the sensor

  • It has a modernized MEMS system for precise H2 measurement.
  • Compact dimensions (13 x 13 x 2.5 mm) allow for easy integration with other project components.
  • It has low energy consumption.
  • Provides precise and stable value reading.
  • It has high sensitivity and short response time.

Precautions during use

  • Before using the sensor, remove the protective film.
  • Avoid using the sensor in an environment where it will be exposed to high concentrations of corrosive gases (such as H2S, SOX, Cl2, HCl, among others).
  • Protect the sensor from contamination with alkalis, alkali metal salts and halogens.
  • Avoid long-term exposure of the tile to unfavorable environmental conditions (such as high temperatures, high humidity, high pollution).
  • Do not expose the module to water.
  • Do not expose the module to vibrations, impacts or falls from height.
  • Do not test the module on systems that involve personal security concerns.
