M5Stack PaperColor is a modern development platform featuring an ESP32-S3R8 microcontroller equipped with a dual-core Xtensa LX7 processor clocked at up to 240 MHz, 16 MB of Flash memory, and 8 MB of PSRAM. The M5Paper Color utilizes a 4-inch E Ink Spectra 6 display with a resolution of 400 x 600 pixels, capable of displaying six colors while maintaining excellent readability even in direct sunlight. A built-in 1250 mAh battery and the advanced M5PM1 power management system enable long-term operation with minimal power consumption. Additionally, the module offers audio functions, environmental sensors , a real-time clock (RTC), a microSD card slot, and an HY2.0-4P expansion interface compatible with the M5Stack ecosystem.

Pinout and connectivity of the M5Stack PaperColor module
The module is equipped with numerous hardware interfaces enabling integration with additional devices and sensors. The E Ink display communicates with the microcontroller via an SPI bus, while the SHT40 sensor, RX8130CE RTC, and M5PM1 power management system share an I2C bus. A Grove HY2.0-4P expansion port (Port A) is available, providing GPIO4 and GPIO5 lines along with a 5V power supply and ground. This allows for quick, solderless connection of compatible Grove and M5Stack modules . Additionally, the device features an IR transmitter , two programmable RGB LED indicators, three user buttons, and a microSD card slot connected via an SPI interface. The audio system uses an I2S bus for communication between the ESP32-S3, the ES8311 codec, and the ES7210 DAC, allowing for projects involving audio recording and playback.

The manufacturer provides full support for the Arduino IDE, PlatformIO, ESP-IDF, and the graphical UiFlow2 environment based on block-based programming. Communication and software uploads are handled via a USB Type-C connector . Programming can be performed using the M5Unified, M5GFX, and M5PM1 libraries, which simplify the operation of the display, peripherals, and power management. The manufacturer also provides sample projects, drivers, and the source code for the factory firmware, significantly accelerating the development of your own applications.
