Revopoint RANGE 3 is a handheld 3D scanner that, from a distance of 1 m, covers a field of 687 x 672 mm in a single frame and scans objects from 30 x 30 x 30 mm up to 4 x 4 x 4 m. It measures shape with VCSEL structured light, that is, an invisible near-infrared pattern projected onto the surface, and the depth map is calculated by a processor built into the scanner.
The scanner works from a distance of 200 mm to 1000 mm and captures up to 30 frames per second, so you can scan a large object in a few smooth passes around it. The volumetric accuracy is 0.05 mm + 1 mm for every meter of object length. In the same scan, the 1.3 MP RGB camera records the color of the surface, so the model gets its texture right away. The scanner itself measures 163 x 57 x 32 mm and fits comfortably in one hand.
It connects to a computer or phone via WiFi 6 or with the USB Type-C cable from the set. The free Revo Scan 6 software runs on Windows, macOS, Android and iOS. The 1/4" thread lets you mount the scanner on a tripod with a ball head, and for smooth objects, scanning markers will come in handy.

What sets this model apart
Closer and faster than RANGE 2
RANGE 3 starts scanning from a distance of 200 mm, half as far as RANGE 2, and captures up to 30 frames per second, so it also covers smaller parts without changing the scanner. Keep in mind that the RGB camera has 1.3 MP, while the RANGE 2 had 2 MP.

From a 30 mm part to a car in one scanner
From a distance of 200 mm, the scanner covers a field of 113 x 134 mm, so you can scan smaller parts up close, such as enclosure elements or brackets. When you move it back to 1000 mm, the field grows to 687 x 672 mm and in a few passes you can scan an armchair, a sculpture or a car hood.
The manufacturer recommends RANGE 3 for quick scanning of medium and large objects: people, sculptures, furniture and device enclosures. The maximum scanning volume is 4 x 4 x 4 m, and the points in the cloud after merging frames lie 0.1 mm apart.

Tracking by shape, color and markers
The scanner merges consecutive frames into one model on its own by tracking the geometric features of the object. When the surface is flat but has a pattern or varied color, you can switch to color tracking, which works in the computer software with a dedicated graphics card.
For smooth objects of a uniform color, stick on markers: at least 5 markers, placed randomly on flat areas, should be visible in the frame. The manufacturer lists the Marker Block Kit as an accessory for RANGE 3, that is, blocks with markers that you place around the scanned item.

Over WiFi 6 and in full sun
For wireless work, the scanner creates its own WiFi 6 network without a password, to which you connect your computer or phone. It is then powered by a handle with a 5000 mAh battery, which is not included with RANGE 3. In wired mode, the scanner works with the USB 3.0 Type-C port of a computer, which powers it (5 V / 2 A).
The manufacturer states that RANGE 3 scans in ambient light of up to 100,000 lx, including full sun, so you can scan a car in a parking lot or a sculpture in a garden. Outdoors, avoid rain and wind.
From point cloud to model in Revopoint software
3DGS model and one-click background removal
Revo Scan 6 turns the point cloud and texture photos from your phone into a photorealistic 3DGS model (Gaussian Splatting) at a 1:1 scale. You can export such a model in Splat or PLY format and measure distances on it as on a mesh.
AI segmentation recognizes the scanned object and, with one click, removes the background from the point cloud, e.g. the floor or a table. Less manual cleaning means a faster path from scan to finished model.

From scan to finished model
In the free Revo Scan 6 software you scan, merge frames, process the point cloud into a mesh and edit the model. The program also measures the distance between two points on the cloud, mesh, textured model and 3DGS model.
You can save the finished model in PLY, OBJ, STL, ASC, 3MF, GLTF, FBX and Splat formats. STL, OBJ and 3MF files open in a 3D printer slicer, and the Revo Measure and Revo Design programs are used for inspection and converting a scan into a CAD model.

Does RANGE 3 work without a cable?
Yes, it connects to a computer or phone via WiFi 6, but for wireless work it needs a handle with a 5000 mAh battery, which is not included in the set. When working over a USB Type-C cable, the scanner is powered from the computer.

The minimum is Windows 10/11 with a 13th generation Intel i7 or Ryzen 7 5800 processor, 16 GB RAM and an RTX 3060 8 GB card, or a Mac with M1 Pro and 16 GB RAM. The manufacturer recommends a 12th generation Intel i9 processor, 32 GB RAM and an RTX 4060 card.
Can RANGE 3 scan glass?
Yes, but after preparation. Before scanning, cover transparent and mirror-like objects, e.g. made of glass, stainless steel or with a galvanized surface, with 3D scanning spray.
