Description
The module uses an ATxmega128A3U microcontroller, as inX3-DIL64 boards. Apart from the AVR chip, the board also includes buttons, LEDs and a USB bootloader, thanks to which no external programmer is needed. EXtrino XL is designed so that it can be quickly expanded with additional chips and peripherals - just put them in the appropriate cradles or useArduino compatiblepads. The eXtrino XL prototype module develops with you and adapts to your needs.
Peripherals and connectors
On the board, in addition to the main microcontroller, there are additional elements to learn about the advantages of the Xmega processor:
- Keyboard and diodes - PORTX
The eXtrino XL module has 8 buttons and 8 LEDs that are connected to the CPU via only four lines! Leon Instruments providesa free library, thanks to which, from the programmer's point of view, the keyboard and LEDs are visible as an additional processor port - PORTX. Experience this innovative solution and use it in your own projects!
- RGB diode connector
Build an RGB lamp, change its brightness and colour - create a disco gadget or atmospheric decoration for romantic evenings. SMD version does not have a soldered LED, it can be purchased separately and mounted on your own.
- Connector for LCD display
The eXtrino XL module works with standard LCD screens through a dedicated connector. The set does not include a display - itcan be purchased separately.
- Connector for quartz resonator
EXtrino XL is equipped with a quartz stand. Put the resonator in it as you need it. The set does not contain quartz - itcan be purchased separately.
- Connector for thermometer LM35/DS18B20
The eXtrino XL prototype plate has the ability to work with two of the most popular thermometers - an analogue LM35 and a digital DS18B20. The plate has a clear marking of how to insert these thermometers into the base. There is also a pull-up resistor for DS18B20, activated by solder jumper on the bottom of the board. The temperature sensors can be purchased in our shop.
- Rotary encoder
XMEGA microcontrollers are equipped with a hardware interface for rotary encoders. Just read the relevant register to know where the knob is located. The SMD version does not have a soldered-in encoder, it can be purchased separately and installed in-house.
- Connectors for I2C and SPI memory
Memories with I2C and SPI interface are very often used in modern digital electronics. Explore EEPROM, SRAM and FLASH memories together with eXtrino XL module.
- Micro SD card slot
The memory will never run out. With the ability to work with SD cards, the XMEGA processor can have gigabytes of data at its disposal. Build a data logger or music player.Memory cards can be purchased in our store.
- USB
The ATxmega128A3U microcontroller used in the eXtrino XL module has a hardware USB interface. This means that you no longer need UART-USB adapters type FT232RL and similar solutions. Connect the miniUSB cable, install the original Atmel driver and go.Cables can be purchased in our shop.
Detailed information about connectors, compatible chips and peripherals can be found in ourcataloguenote. A paper version of the manual in Polish and English is included. |
Compatibility with Arduino
The eXtrino module cooperates with Arduino overlays (so-called ArduinoShield).Remember, however, that some of the covers are designed to work with ATmega processors, powered by 5V, and XMEGA works with 3.3V. You can, however, determine the voltage with which the pads should work, by setting one jumper.
The SMD version does not have solderableconnectors, you can purchase them separately and install them yourself.
Programming
The chip is equipped with Flash program memory and EEPROM data. ATXmega can be programmed in three ways:
- Programmer compliant with PDI standard.
- FLIP Bootloader - programming is done by connecting a miniUSB cable with a computer. To load the program you needa program from the manufacturer. To program, hold down the RESET and FLIP button, then release the RESET while holding down the FLIP. After these actions, the system will enter the programming mode, which means that it is ready to accept the program.
- JTAG interface - there is no separate JTAG connector on the board, interface should be connected to the outputs: TDO, TCK, TDI, TMS.
There are buttons on the board that improve and speed up programming process: RESET and FLIP. To load the program justminiUSB cable.
All boards with Leon Instruments have a unique serial number. The number allows free, unlimited, full access to the XMEGA microcontroller programming course, available on the leon-instruments website:
