Carbon monoxide sensors
Carbon monoxide sensors are designed to monitor closed rooms for the presence of carbon monoxide (CO) in the air. For sensors with display, the LCD will display the CO concentration value in PPM (one particle of CO per million air particles). The sensitivity of the alarms is selected so that they react at concentrations of CO that are not life-threatening and enable appropriate action to be taken long before the concentration of carbon monoxide reaches a level that is hazardous to health. If an increased concentration of carbon monoxide is detected, an alarm is automatically triggered in the form of an optical and acoustic signal, which informs people inside the building about a possible threat. The CO sensors are highly selective for carbon monoxide, ie they do not detect any other gases. They cannot be used as smoke detectors. Although the smoke also contains carbon monoxide particles, the CO alarm activation time can be long enough that the fire spreads in an unmanageable manner. CO sensors, like any other devices with an electrochemical sensor, have a limited operating time, usually about 10 years from the moment of installing the power battery. Then, the signalling about the end of the service life will be activated. In this case, the sensor should be replaced immediately, as it cannot detect carbon monoxide.
What should you consider when buying a carbon monoxide sensor?
First of all, it should be noted that it is a brand-name product manufactured following the standards in force in Poland for home carbon monoxide detectors. Compliance with the standard must be confirmed by an independent, notified testing body. The mere declaration issued by the manufacturer or importer is not sufficient! The sensor must have a built-in sound and light signalling of exceeding the permissible CO threshold. In the case of sensors with an LCD, the current level of carbon monoxide concentration should be displayed on an ongoing basis. When there is no carbon monoxide in the room, the number 0 should be constantly displayed on the LCD panel. This is additional information for the user that the batteries powering the detector are not discharged.
